Softball drops series finale at CWRU

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Brandeis University softball team was unable to complete a University Athletic Association series sweep today, as the Judges dropped an 11-1 decision at Case Western Reserve.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 20-17, 7-9 UAA.
  • Case Western Reserve: 21-12, 9-6 UAA,
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A day after outscoring CWRU, 29-9, the Spartans turned the tables with an 11-1 win.
  • The teams each had five hits in the contest, but the home team was able to take advantage of sloppy play by Brandeis. The Judges issued seven walks, hit four batters, committed three errors, and had four wild pitches.
  • Case scored six runs in the bottom of the first on just two hits, including a home run by Alaina Steffes. The Spartans added two runs on one hit in the second and three more in the fourth on two hits.
  • Brandeis spoiled the CWRU shutout bid in the top of the fifth, as senior Erin Hunt (Wake Forest, N.C./Franklin Academy) doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Katie Baydian (Massapequa, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy).
  • First-year Madeline Jennings (New York, N.Y./Beacon) took the loss in the circle, allowing the Spartans' six runs in the first. She falls to 6-8 on the season.
  • Despite the loss, the Judges picked up a series win over Case Western Reserve for the first time since 2019.
UP NEXT
  • With finals approaching, the Judges will be off for two weeks before hosting the University of Chicago for a three-game UAA series on May 8 and 9. They will need just one win to secure a winning record.
