#24 men's tennis take four first sets before falling to #2 Tufts

WALTHAM, Mass. – The #24-ranked Brandeis University men's tennis team, took four first sets in singles action today, but the Judges could only convert one of them into a victory as the Judges dropped a 6-1 decision to #2-ranked Tufts in the Gosman Athletic Center today.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tufts edged ahead by taking two of three doubles matches. The Jumbos won 6-1 at #1, while Brandeis's duo of first-year Muaz Malik (Dubai, UAE/Laurel Springs School) and junior Huasen Dong (Richmond Hill, Ont./Richmond Green Second School) swept at #3, 6-0. The visitors clinched the win at #2 with a 6-2 win.
  • In singles action, the first three matches all saw Brandeis win the first set before the Jumbos rallied.
  • At #1 and #2, sophomore Daniel Shemesh (Modiin, Israel/Ironi Hey School Modiin) and junior Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) fell by identical 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 scores, putting Tufts one point away from winning.
  • While sophomore Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary School) was engaged in a marathon at #6, the Jumbos picked up a quick 6-3, 6-0, win at #3 to clinch victory. Wang-Fan eventually dropped a 5-7, 4-6, 6-7 (7-9) decision.
  • After Tufts won another long tiebreaker to capture a 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) win at #5, Brandeis first-year Oliver Lorenz (Albuquerque, N.M./Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy) picked up the Judges' lone point with a 6-1, 5-7, 10-8 win, taking the last set in a super tiebreaker.

  • The Judges will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when they take on Bridgewater State University.
