Baseball opens UAA series with 13-2 drubbing of CWRU

CLEVELAND, Ohio. – The Brandeis University baseball team broke things wide open with a six-run eighth inning to defeat Case Western Reserve, 13-2, in the opener of a four-game University Athletic Association series in Cleveland.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 8-6, 1-0 UAA.
  • Case Western, 11-8, 0-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning, scoring three runs on a series of timely hits. RBI knocks from sophomore Danny Tambascia (Newton, Mass. / Newton North) and sophomore Keith Lee (Milford, Mass. / Milford), along with a sacrifice fly from junior Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass. / Arlington), gave the Judges an early 3-0 advantage.
  • After adding another run in the third, Brandeis broke the game open in the fourth inning. The Judges tallied three runs on five hits, highlighted by a two-run single from Tambascia and an RBI single by sophomore Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) to extend the lead to 7-0.
  • Case Western got on the board in the fifth and added another in the seventh, but struggled to capitalize on multiple bases-loaded opportunities, leaving runners stranded in key moments.
  • The decisive blow came in the eighth inning, when Brandeis erupted for six runs despite recording just two hits. The inning featured a combination of four walks, three hit batters, a balk, and a passed ball, which allowed the Judges to extend their lead to 13-2.
  • Brandeis pitching kept Case Western in check throughout. Junior starter Andrew Tringe (Montpelier, Vt. / Montpelier) earned the win for the Judges, bringing his season record to 2-2. He pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out four.
  • Sophomore Brady Lane (Hingham, Mass. / Boston College High School) pitched the remaining 1.2 innings, also striking out four to close out the game.
  • The Brandeis defense, owning the seventh-best fielding percentage in Division III this season, was outstanding, turning three double plays and cutting down two runners on the basepaths.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Brandeis out-hit Case Western, 14-7.
  • Tambascia led the offense, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a season high 3 RBI. It was his second career four-hit game and his second with three runs scored, with the other time also coming against Case Western Reserve last season.
  • Lee and junior Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y. / Trinity Pawling) each had two hits and drove in runs, while junior Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn. / Notre Dame-West Haven) reached base five times with two hits and three walks, scoring three runs.
  • Brandeis drew eight walks in total and benefited from 3 hit-by-pitches.
  • Case Western left eight runners on base, including multiple bases-loaded situations.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will face Case Western Reserve University again tomorrow, Sat. March 28th, for a double header, beginning with games beginning at 12pm and 3pm.
