#29 men sweep D2 Franklin Pierce

WALTHAM, Mass. – The 29th-ranked Brandeis University men's tennis team delivered a dominant performance on Saturday morning, securing a 7-0 shutout victory over Division II opponent Franklin Pierce University at the Gosman Athletic Center.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 5-3, ranked #29 in Division III.
  • Franklin Pierce: 1-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis took control early by sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the opening point.
  • At the #2 position, sophomore Daniel Shemesh (Modiin, Israel / Ironi Hei School Modiin) and sophomore Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Bill Crothers Secondary School) finished first with a clinical 6-2 victory.
  • The duo of first-year Muaz Malik (Dubai, UAE / Laurel Springs School) and junior Huasen Dong (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Richmond Green Second School) followed with a 6-4 win at #3 doubles.
  • Junior Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) and first-year Oliver Lorenz (Albuquerque, N.M. / Rafa Nadal Academy) completed the sweep at the top flight with a hard-fought 7-5 win. It was their first match as a pairing this season.
  • The Judges continued their momentum into singles play, winning all six flights—though two matches required third-set tiebreakers to preserve the shutout.
  • At #1 singles, Shemesh bounced back after dropping the first set 7-5. He responded by taking the second 6-4 and outlasted his opponent 12-10 in a marathon third-set tiebreaker.
  • Malik faced a similar battle at the #3 spot, winning a close first set 7-5 before dropping the second by the same score. He regained his composure in the tiebreaker, winning 10-6 to secure the point.
  • The rest of the lineup cruised in straight sets:
  • Sophomore David Wang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai United International School) got the singles action started with a win at #6 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Garbett followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #2.
  • After the two three-setters completed, Wang-Fan was dominant at #5, winning 6-1, 6-4 and Dong added a 6-4, 6-3 victory at #4 to close things out.
