ATLANTA, Ga. – Brandeis University women's basketball senior
Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) scored the game-winning basket with 1.2 seconds left in regulation tonight as the Judges upset the #22-ranked Emory University Eagles, 64-62, in a University Athletic Association contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Judges led for the majority of this game, closing the first quarter on a 7-2 run over the last 3:14 to take a 15-11 lead.
- Brandeis continued the run by scoring the first 10 points of the second quarter, taking a 25-11 lead on a 3-pointer by junior Claire Candela (Maynard, Mass./Claire Candela) less than two-and-a-half minutes in.
- Emory's defense stepped up for the next five minutes as they scored 13 of the next 15 points to close back within 27-24 on a Claire Connelly free throw at the 2:20 mark.
- Brandeis held off the charge, taking a 34-29 lead into halftime.
- Senior Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) had 10 first-half points, while sophomore Saviah Shabazz (Plano, Texas/Plano West) added nine.
- The hosts closed within one point a couple of times in the third period, but Brandeis closed the frame on a 6-0 run, holding Emory scoreless for the last 2:40, with a Candela buzzer-beater giving the Brandeis a 49-42 lead.
- The Eagles Alexandra Loucopoulos scored 11 of the Eagles 13 points in the third.
- After Brandeis senior Brooke Reed (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) scored the first basket of the fourth, Emory's offense caught fire.
- The Eagles hit their first five baskets, while limiting the Brandeis offense to one hoop, and they took their first lead since 9-8 when Mia Strazza dialed long distance to make it 55-53, Emory with 5:56 left in the game.
- Kennedy answered with a 3-pointer of her own, and the lead would change hands four more times down the stretch.
- Emory's Tatum Olson converted a traditional three-point play with 2:03 remaining, giving them a 62-60 lead, their last of the game.
- The team's defenses stepped up, producing four-straight stops.
- Trailing by two, Brandeis got the ball back with about 30 seconds to go when the Eagles were called for an illegal screen. The Judges tied the game when Vaughan found graduate student Elena Delicado (Madrid, Spain/IES Parqua de Lisboa) wide open for a lay-up with about 22 seconds left.
- Emory called a timeout to advance the ball to the front court, but Brandeis's defense got a five-second call to get the ball back.
- The Judges inbounded the ball to Shabazz, who looked to be tied up on the right block, but she found a cutting Vaughan, whose path the rim was wide open, and she hit the game-winning basket with 1.2 seconds on the clock.
- Emory again called timeout to advance the ball, but the Judges were able to keep them from getting off a shot for the winner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis's win was their first in Atlanta since 2014, also the last time the Judges swept Emory.
- The Judges used a balanced attack to pull out the win, with six different players scoring between eight and 13 points. Kennedy led the team with 13, hitting 5-of-11 overall and 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
- Candela added 10 points, seven in the second half, for her second-straight game reaching double figures.
- Vaughan finished with nine points, including the game-winner, as did Shabazz. Reed finished with nine points, six coming in the fourth quarter.
- Delicado added eight points and game-highs with nine rebounds – four on the offensive glass – and a career-high five assists.
- The Judges outscored Emory, 36-24, in the paint, and 12-8 on second-chance points, owning a 16-15 edge on the offensive glass.
- Emory's Olson led all scorers with 22 points – 11 coming in the fourth quarter – while Loucopoulos had 11 of her 18 in the third. Only one other Emory player, Strazza, had as many as eight points.
- Chloe Kreusser had seven rebounds to lead the hosts, while Strazza and Loucopoulos each had four assists.
