Volleyball earns 3-2 UAA win over CWRU, pushes #13 Chicago to four

NEW YORK, N.Y. – In a tight match that saw all five sets decided by three points or fewer, the Brandeis University volleyball team outlasted Case Western Reserve, 3-2, to earn their first University Athletic Association win of the season. The Judges met #13-ranked Chicago later in the day and tool the third set before dropping a 3-1 decision. The matches were held at NYU.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 8-11, 1-4 UAA.
  • Case Western Reserve, 10-11, 1-4 UAA.
  • Chicago, 17-1, 3-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS CASE WESTERN RESERVE (25-23, 26-28, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13)
  • The match between the Judges and Spartans was as tight as could be, featuring 30 ties and 15 lead changes across the five sets, including 22 ties and 13 lead changes in the first two.
  • The teams each scored 83 points and the Judges had a 63-62 edge in kills. Brandeis had 15 service aces to nine for CWRU, while the Spartans offset it with a 12-5 edge in block.
  • Brandeis also had slight edges in assists (60-58) and digs (82-80).
  • The first set saw no team lead by more than four points, an early 10-6 lead by Case.
  • Brandeis answered with a 5-1 run, and the teams stayed close from there. CWRU was within two points of victory at 23-22, but a kill from first-year Kennedy Hilson (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) knotted things up, and the Judges got a block and a Spartan error to take the first set, 25-23.
  • In the second set, Brandeis scored seven straight points on the serve of junior Alexa Ho (Queens, N.Y./Frances Lewis) to take a 14-9 lead.
  • The Judges maintained their five-point advantage until the score was 22-17, but the Spartans answered with a 4-0 run to close within 22-21.
  • Brandeis took a 23-21 lead, but CWRU responded again, with a 3-0 run to get the first set point at 24-23. The teams traded the next five points before the Spartans won two in a row to take it, 28-26. The set was Brandeis's longest of the season.
  • Brandeis led by as many as six points in the third set at 16-10, but the Spartans rallied to tie things up at 17-all.
  • The Judges made another push to take a 22-19 lead, but Case Western Reserve closed in a 6-1 run to win, 25-23, and take the two-sets-to-one lead.
  • Brandeis was able to keep CWRU at bay in the fourth set, opening on a 6-2 run and never trailing again. They led by as many as five points, and a kill by junior Madison Haft-Abromovitch (Stratford, Conn./Rye Country Day School) forced the fifth and final set at 25-22, the only set decided by more than two points.
  • Brandeis managed to never trail in the fifth set. After the teams traded small 2-0 run to start the frame, a Case service error, a kill by Haft-Abromovitch and another Spartan error gave Brandeis a 5-2 lead.
  • The Spartans would creep within one point on a couple of occasions, but timeouts by Brandeis coach Alesia Bennett halted the momentum, and a block by Haft-Abromovitch and first-year Talia Celotto (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) closed out the match.
  • Offensively, Brandeis put four players in double figures in kills. Haft-Abromovitch had a match-high 19, while junior Kennedy Lilly (Atlanta, Ga./Eagle's Landing Christian Academy) added 16. Hilson reached double digits for the third match in a row with 13 kills, and first-year Nina Schweigert (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) had 10.
  • Lilly also led the Judges with five service aces and three block assists.
  • Ho finished with 38 assists and four service aces, while first-year Camila Valenzuela (Winter Park, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) posted a double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs.
  • Junior Taylor Lewis (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) had a team-high 20 digs, while sophomore Evelyn Burke (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) had 14.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. CHICAGO (20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 14-25)
  • The Judges played tight with the one-loss Maroons in the first three sets, staying within five points before UC pulled away in the fourth.
  • In the first set, the Judges were within 22-20 before Chicago rattled off the final three points, while in the second, Brandeis was ahead, 23-19. They couldn't put the Maroons away, as UC scored the last six points to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The third set featured 10 ties and five lead changes, but this time it was the Judges with the big comeback. Down 18-13, they scored seven of the next eight points to take a 20-19 lead on a block by Schweigert and Haft-Abromovitch. Chicago scored the next point to tie things up at 20-all, but Brandeis closed on a 5-2 run to escape with the 25-22 win on a UC service error.
  • In the fourth set, the game was tight in the early going, and Brandeis was within 9-7, but Chicago rattled off 14 of the next 16 points to pull away for the 25-14 clincher.
  • Haft-Abromovitch totaled a match-high 16 kills, but no other Brandeis player had more than seven. She also had a team-high three blocks.
  • Ho and Valenzuela each had double-doubles at setter, with Ho marking 15 assists and 16 digs, while Valenzuela had 17 assists and 15 digs. Valenzuela also topped the team with three service aces.
