WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University graduate student
Aedan Using (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) turned in the first triple-double for the Judges' men's basketball team since at least 2002 today with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the hosts past visiting New York University, 88-85, in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 8-4, 1-0 UAA.
- NYU, 9-3, 0-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half was back-and-forth early. Brandeis jumped out to a 10-2 lead only to see NYU score the next 10 points and edge ahead, 12-10.
- The Violets extended the run to 18-3, taking their largest lead of the game at 20-15 on a Luke Kolaja lay-up at the 11:39 mark.
- The Judges responded with three-straight 3-pointers, with Using hitting two and assisting a third by senior Elias Rodl (Berlin, Germany/Schulund Leistungssportzentrum Berlin). Using's second trifecta in the run made it 24-20 Judges with 10:03 to go, and Brandeis never trailed again.
- The hosts would extend the lead by as many as seven points, but NYU closed within one on three separate occasions, the latest after two Bryan Moussako free throws with 1:41 to go in the first.
- Brandeis pulled away before the end of the break by scoring the last seven points to take a 44-36 lead into halftime.
- The Judges started the second half with a 5-2 run that opened up their first double-digit lead, 49-38, on a Rodl traditional three-point play.
- Brandeis's advantage bulged as high as 17 points after junior Ali Kaan Bek (Istanbul, Turkey/Koc School) dialed long distance with 4:28 left to make it 78-61.
- NYU's full-court pressure over the final stretch was effective, as the Violets were able to claw within single digits with 2:05 to go.
- Brandeis's 11-point lead with 34 second left withstood NYU's Carnegie Johnson, who scored the Violets' final seven points as they clawed within the final three-point margin before time expired.
