DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Brandeis University cross country teams returned to action after three weeks, competing at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational today. Both squads were led by newcomers, as the women finished 12
th overall and third among Division III teams, while the men were 19
th overall and seventh among D3 squads.
Leading the way for the women was grad transfer
Shae Regan (Littleton, Mass./Littleton). The former Northeaster track runner placed 37
th overall and eighth among D3 runners with a time of 22:36.82 over the six-kilometer course. Senior captain
Katriona Briggs (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo Atherton) was the team's second runner with one of her best collegiate races, coming in 83
rd overall with a time of 23:29.23, 21
st in Division III. It was Briggs' first time breaking 24 minutes for a 6K race.
Briggs led a quartet of Judges who finished with 16 seconds of each other. Junior
Sadie Harrow (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) was 87
th overall and 23
rd in Division III with a mark of 23:29.23. First-year
Mikaela Beeler (Livermore, Calif./Livermore) was not far behind in 92
nd place, 25
th in Division III, with a time of 23:39.98 in her first collegiate 6K. Senior
Ella Warkentine (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) was also in the same pack, finishing 96
th with a time of 23:45.50. She was 28
th among D3 competitors, rounding out the Judges' top five.
First-year
Melissa Keenan (E. Brunswick, N.J./E. Brunswick) - 108
th in 24:02.14; junior
Shayna Zavell (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) – 140
th in 24:49.23; and senior
Calli Morvay (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) – 161
st in 25:11.35 completed the Brandeis squad.
On the men's side, the Judges had six runners competing in the field. First-year
Ben Weiner (Marlton, N.J..Cherokee) had an outstanding performance in his first collegiate eight-kilometer race, covering the course in 26:24.96 to finish in 79
th place, 15
th among Division III runners. Junior
Hugh Licklider (Newton, Mass./BC High) was just eight seconds behind Weiner in 83
rd with a time of 26:32.37. Licklider broke 27 minutes for the first time by nearly half a minute.
Sophomore
Ben Katsev (N. Andover, Mass./N. Andover) took 25 seconds off his 8K personal best to finish in 118
th place with a time of 2:07.01. Classmate
Parker Cook (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook) was just off his p.r. by four seconds with a time of 27:37.82. Sophomore
James Waters (N. Merrick, N.Y./Wellington C. Mepham) took the final scoring spot with a time of 28:22.16, while classmate
Aidan Shames (Inwood, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics) rounded out the squad in 29:54.83, three seconds off his p.r.
The Judges return to action in two weeks at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.
