Volleyball closes out Brandeis Invitational with sweep of Wentworth

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University volleyball team was tested in the first two sets, then used a late run to take the third as the Judges swept the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards in Red Auerbach Arena today. Set scores were 25-23, 25-22, 25-17.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first set, the Judges trailed, 23-22, but got two kills from sophomore Madison Haft-Abromovitch (Stratford, Conn./Rye Country Day School) sandwiched around an ace from first-year Colette Ejang (Los Angeles, Calif./Taft Charter School) to rally for the 25-23 win.
  • In the second, Brandeis took an early 4-1 lead and never trailed again. The Leopards cut the deficit to 24-22 late before sophomore Kennedy Lilly (Atlanta, Ga./Eagle's Landing Christian Acad.) delivered the set-winning kill.
  • The third stanza saw the visitors go ahead by as many as five points. They took a 13-8 lead on a kill by Savannah Morford, but Brandeis answered in a big way.
  • The Judges scored 13 unanswered points to take a 21-13 lead. First-year DS Lara Demoraes (Plantation, Fla./Cypress Bay) had a pair of service aces in the run, while Lilly had three kills and senior Anna Ertischek (Montgomery, Texas/Lake Creek) had two kills and a block in the run.
  • The Judges kept momentum up and won the third, 25-17.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ertischek led the Brandeis attack for the third match in a row with 13 kills. She made just three errors in 26 attempts for a .385 hitting percentage. Ertischek also delivered two aces and two blocks (one solo).
  • Haft-Abromovitch added 11 kills, reaching double digits for the third match in a row.
  • Sophomore setter Alexa Ho (Queens, N.Y./Francis Lewis) had a fine all-around match with 33 assists, nine digs and two block assists.
  • DeMoraes matched Ho for team-high with nine digs.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges play host to UMass-Boston in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m.
