Baseball blanks NYU in series finale to earn split

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – In a pair of games ended by the University Athletic Association's 10-run rule, the Brandeis University baseball team earned a doubleheader and series split with NYU today. The Judges dropped today's opener, 16-3, but bounced back to win, 14-0, in Game 2.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 10-16, 2-6 UAA.
  • NYU: 15-10, 3-5 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (NYU 16, Brandeis 3 – 7 innings)
  • The Violets scored in all but one of their at-bats in Game 1, outhitting Brandeis, 14-6, in a 16-3 rout. NYU also drew six walks and were hit by a pitch.
  • The hosts scored four runs in the first inning and one more in the second.
  • Brandeis got on the board in the third, scoring runs on a passed ball and an RBI single by grad student Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson), getting within 5-2.
  • The Violets blew things open in the fourth inning, when they sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on five hits and four walks.
  • NYU added a single run in the fifth, and after Judge first-year DH Danny Tambascia (Newton, Mass./Newton North) knocked in a run in the top of the sixth with a double, NYU scored two more in the bottom of the frame, including a home run by Nick Argenziano. That was one of four extra-base hits by the Violets on the day.
  • Freed was Brandeis's only multiple hitter, going 2-3 with a double, and RBI and a run scored.
  • All nine NYU starters had hits, with the bottom four batters in their lineup going 9-for-14 with 10 RBI and eight runs scored.
  • Brandeis grad student Eddie Zanor (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) took the loss for the Judges, falling to 0-4 on the season. He allowed eight runs on six hits and four walks and a hit batter. He struck out two.
  • NYU's Paul Guerne got his first win of the season, improving to 1-0. He went five innings and allowed just two hits and two unearned runs. Guerne struck out six and walked four.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (Brandeis 14, NYU 0 – 7 innings)
  • The Judges turned the tables on the Violets in Game 2, as three pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout – the team's second of the season.
  • Grad transfer Ryan Antrim (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) got the start and improved to 1-0 with five innings of four-hit ball. He walked three and struck out two. First-year Jack Sweeney (Waltham, Mass./Austin Prep) retired the side in order in the fifth with a strikeout, while classmate Brady Lane (Hingham, Mass./Boston College HS) got the final three outs, including a relay to cut down a run at the plate to end the game and preserve the shutout.
  • Offensively, Brandeis batted around in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring six runs in each frame.
  • They pounded out 15 hits, with each starter having at least one hit. Eight of nine Judges scored a run, with six crossing the plate multiple times.
  • Zanor had a terrific game at the plate, going 4-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and two double.
  • Freed and Tambascia each had doubles, while sophomore LF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) had a team-high four RBI, including a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning that increased the team's lead from 6-0 to 9-0.
  • Brandeis took advantage of wildness from seven different NYU pitchers, drawing eight walks and one hit-by-pitch, and scoring twice on a passed ball and once on a wild pitch.
  • With the win, Brandeis reached double digits in victories for the first time since 2022.
UP NEXT
  • Brandeis will host Emory University next weekend in a four-game UAA series, starting on Friday, April 11, at 3 p.m.
