Warden no-no goes for naught as Judges drop two to Tufts

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University first-year Claire Warden (Annandale, Va./Woodson) threw the Judges' first no-hitter since 2021, but it was to no avail, as the Judges gave up three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against Tufts University, falling to the Jumbos, 3-2, in the second game of a doubleheader. Tufts won the opener, 6-5, on the strength of a six-run fifth inning.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 8-27-1.
  • Tufts, 23-13.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (Tufts 3, Brandeis 2)
  • Warden was the story of Game 2. She worked around a leadoff walk in the second, and a pair of Brandeis errors in the third, getting a strikeout and a couple of groundouts.
  • The Judges scored the first run of the game in the fourth, when sophomore 1B Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled and scored all the way from first on a double by grad student 3B  Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central). Tufts senior Lacy Chilek left Nash at second to limit the damage in the inning.
  • Tufts put two runners in scoring position in the fifth on a hit batter, a bunt and and an error, but a strikeout and a liner to first got Warden out of the inning unscathed.
  • Nash was in the middle of the Judges' second run as well, singling with one out against reliever Sarah Cullen and scoring on a double from first-year Jordan Wallace (Howell, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall) in the sixth inning giving the Judges a 2-0 lead. Fallon O'Connor came in and got the final two outs of the inning.
  • Tufts took advantage of sloppy play to score three times in the bottom of the sixth with no hits. Two errors on balls hit to middle infielders put the first two runners on. A passed ball moved them up, and a walk loaded the bases.
  • Warden got the first out of the inning on a grounder to short, with the out coming at first base, but keeping the lead in the Judges' hands.
  • A passed ball allowed the tying run to score, and an error on the same play brought in the go-ahead run.
  • Warden issued another walk, but got the final two outs of the inning.
  • With two away in the seventh, sophomore SS Katie Baydian (Massapequa, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Acad.) drew a walk and stole second, but O'Connor got a strikeout to end the game.
  • Despite the no-hitter, Warden shouldered the loss, falling to 0-6. She walked three and hit two to go with two strikeouts. She threw 117 pitches in the complete-game effort, her second of the season.
  • Warden's no-hitter was the first since Sydney Goldman struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced on April 10, 2021, against Worcester State. This was just the second no-no by a Brandeis pitcher since 2011.
  • O'Connor improved to 5-6 after 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Chilek went 5.1 innings and allowed seven hits and two earned runs, striking out seven without a walk.
  • Nash and Baydian each had two hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE (Tufts 6, Brandeis 5)
  • In the opener, two Brandeis crooked numbers were unable to best a six-run fifth for the Jumbos.
  • After four scoreless innings, Brandeis broke the ice in the fifth. Senior catcher Tristan Boyer (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) drove in a run with a double to start the scoring, and later in the inning, sophomore Hannah Fletcher (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) stole home on the back end of a double steal with first-year Mary Doud (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge).
  • The Jumbos immediately responded by sending 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs on seven hits against junior Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy). Grad student Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) walked the first two hitters she faced before ending the inning with a strikeout.
  • Brandeis looked to get back in the game when Burdenski emptied the loaded bases with a one-out double in the top of the sixth, cutting the deficit to 6-5.
  • O'Connor, who gave up the two-bagger, got the next two outs on called third strikes to end the inning, then retired the Judges in order in the seventh to earn her sixth save of the season.
  • Kannan fell to 4-8 after going 4.2 innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs. She walked one without a strikeout.
  • Tufts' Sofia DiCocco improved to 13-6 with 5.1 innings of six-hit ball, allowing four runs (three earned) with six strikeouts and no walks.
  • Boehmer and Wallace each had two hits for the Judges, while Burdenski had a double and three runs driven in. Boyer also doubled.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges end their season with three straight University Athletic Association games at the University of Chicago May 9-10.
