Baseball falls to Amherst, 5-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team suffered a 5-1 loss at home to the visiting Amherst College Mammoths, as the teams split a series that saw them play games nearly two months apart.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 11-28.
  • Amherst, 18-14.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game was a pitcher's duel through the first eight innings, as neither team was able to gain a lead of more than a run.
  • The Mammoths scored the opening run of the game just two batters in, as Aiden Dubetsky led off with a single and scored from first on a double by Tyler McCord.
  • Brandeis grad student Chris Lowe (Chatham, N.J./Oratory Prep) left McCord at third after he stole the bag with two away.
  • The Judges broke through with a run in the fifth inning, as sophomore Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by first-year catcher Keith Lee (Milford, Mass./Milford).
  • Amherst got the run right back in the top of the sixth against junior reliever Cooper Gavin (Beverly, Mass./Beverly), as they led off with two singles and executed a double steal to put runners in scoring position. After a called third strike was followed by a walk to load the bases, Amherst's Jack McDermott beat out the relay throw as the Judges tried to execute a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning. Another grounder to short left an insurance run at third.
  • Brandeis had a chance to get the run back in the bottom of the frame when first-year 3B Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) singled through the right side to lead off and moved to second on a wild pitch. A grounder to the right side moved Kuja to third, but a sharp liner up the middle by grad student Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) was snagged by the pitcher and turned into a double play to end the threat.
  • The Mammoths stranded two runners in the eighth, but they added three insurance run in the ninth on a single by Dubetsky and a two-run home run by Ryan McIntyre.
  • The Judges threatened in the bottom of the inning, with Kuja getting his third hit of the game, while a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases with two out. Jack Sampedro, Amherst's sixth pitcher of the day, got a called third strike to end the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kuja led the Judges with three of the team's five hits, while Walsh's double was the only extra-base hit.
  • Dubetsky went 3-5 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI out of the leadoff spot, while McIntyre's two RBI on his home run were a game-high.
  • Gavin was the hard-luck loser, despite a team-high 3.2 innings of work and six strikeouts. He allowed three hits and one earned run with one walk.
  • Matt Tabet earned the win for the Mammoths despite allowing the only Brandeis run on two hits in his only inning of work. He improved to 3-3.
  • The Judges had defeated Amherst, 6-4, on March 1 at Waltham High School.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will celebrate their Senior Day tomorrow at 7 PM against Curry College in their season finale.
