#33 men fall to #32 WashU in UAA consolation semis, 4-0

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team were swept by Washington University today in the University Athletic Association tournament consolation semifinals. The Judges were seeded seventh and ranked #33 in Division III this season, while the Bears were seeded sixth and ranked #32. Brandeis will meet the University of Rochester in tomorrow's UAA seventh-place match.

  • Brandeis: 8-8, ranked #33 in Division III by ITA.
  • Washington U: 12-8, ranked #32 in Division III.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • WashU's bottom of the lineup was successful, denying the Judges' top players a chance to score points.
  • In doubles action, they won, 6-3, at #3 and 6-2, at #2, to clinch the doubles point. Brandeis's top tandem of grad student Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) and first-year Daniel Shemesh (Modiin, Israel/Ironi Hei Modiin) were tied at 5-all at #1 when the point was clinched.
  • In singles action, the Bears won at #5 and #6 by identical 6-1, 6-0, scores to move within a point of clinching.
  • Brandeis sophomore Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) won his first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5), but WashU's Stefan Hester rallied to win the next two, 6-2, 6-2, to end the match early.
  • Walters led his opponent at #1, 7-6 (8-6), 4-3, while Shemesh was even at #2, 2-6, 6-4. First-year Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary School) was down a set, 6-7 (3-7), but up in the second, 2-1.

  • The Judges will wrap up the dual match season tomorrow at 8:30 against Rochester in the UAA tournament 7th-place match.
