WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team celebrated their annual Spring Pride Day today with a doubleheader against #17-ranked Case Western Reserve University, but the Judges were unable to upset the Spartans, dropping two close games, 6-3 and 6-2.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 8-24-1, 3-11 UAA.
- Case Western Reserve, 23-9, 10-4 UAA, ranked #17 nationally in Division III by NFCA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE (CWRU 6, Brandeis 3)
- The Judges took advantage of wildness from CWRU starting pitcher Lexi Miskey, scoring two runs on one hit and four walks in the bottom of the first.
- After Miskey issued back-to-back free passes with the bases loaded to Brandeis's Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and Jordan Wallace (Howell, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall, Conn.), she was lifted in favor of Kylie Hosey, who escaped further damage with a pop to short and a called third strike.
- Brandeis junior Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Acad.) was in control through the first three innings, getting five of six outs by strikeout in the second and third.
- The Spartans struck in the fourth with two outs, as Katelyn Lamm singled and Isabella Russo delivered a home run to right center field to tie the game at 2-all.
- Sophomore Katie Baydian (Massapequa, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Acad.) singled with one out in the bottom of the inning. She stole second and scored two batters later on a ground out by sophomore Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) to put Brandeis back on top, 3-2.
- The visitors went ahead for good in the top of the fifth with three runs, including a game-tying single by Karen Potts and a go-ahead sacrifice fly by KaiLi Gross.
- They added an insurance run in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. Brandeis had base runners in their last three at-bats, but were unable to get them home.
- Kannan took the loss, falling to 4-6 on the season. She threw five innings, allowing five hits and six earned runs. She struck out five and walked five. Grad student Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) tossed the final two innings.
- Hosey kept the Judges in check, improving to 8-6 with 6.2 innings of relief. She allowed five hits and one earned run, striking out seven and walking three.
- At the plate, Baydian led the Judges, going 2-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Lamm paced the visitors with three hits, while Russo's two RBI were tops in the game. Six different Spartans scored runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME TWO (CWRU 6, Brandeis 2)
- Both teams scored runs in the first inning, with Elizabeth Berry driving in a run in the top of the frame for CWRU. In the bottom, Baydian was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, third on an infield grounder, and scored when she beat a throw home on another grounder.
- Despite being held hitless by Miskey through the first three innings, the Judges took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on their first hit of the game, a solo home run by Wallace. It was her team-leading fifth round-tripper of the season.
- Case got the runs back and then some in the top of the fifth, as the Judges ran into some tough luck.
- After a single and a double put runners in scoring position against first-year Claire Warden (Annandale, Va./Woodson), classmate Jamie Staub (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hun School) issued a walk to load the bases. Staub got Lamm to launch a fly ball to right that seemed like an easy play, but the Brandeis defender slipped in the outfield, allowing the ball drop in for two RBI.
- After a wild pitch allowed the Spartans to increase their lead to 4-2, they had two runners in scoring position. Ashley Miller hit a hard shot back up the middle that Staub deflected with her glove, and aggressive base running allowed two more runs to come home, giving CWRU the 6-2 lead.
- Miskey allowed a couple of Brandeis runners in the sixth, but ended the inning with a strikeout , and she retired the side in the seventh to finish the complete game.
- Miskey improved to 14-3 this season, allowing just two hits and two earned runs in seven innings. She struck out six and walked two.
- Warden allowed six hits and three earned runs in four innings, falling to 0-5 on the campaign. She struck out three and walked one. Staub gave up two hits and three earned runs in three innings of work.
- Wallace and RF Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif./san Juan Hills) had the Judges' lone hits on the day.
- Lamm led CWRU, going 2-3 with two RBI, and one of the team's three doubles.
