#33 men's tennis gets wins at the top of singles lineup in 5-2 loss to #3 Tufts

WALTHAM, Mass. – The #33-ranked Brandeis men's tennis team got a pair of wins at the top of the singles lineup, but the Judges fell to #3-ranked Tufts, 5-2, in their final match before the 2025 University Athletic Association championships.

  • Tufts: 17-1, #3 in Division III national poll by ITA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges dropped the doubles point for only the fourth time this season, and they got swept for only the second time. The Jumbos won, 6-2, 6-1, and 6-1, to open a 1-0 lead.
  • Brandeis was playing without two roster members in singles, and were unable to field at player at #6, putting Tufts ahead, 2-0.
  • Tufts won the first three singles matches that were contested, with Eren Cheung defeating first-year David Galvez (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) at #5, 6-0, 6-1, and Garv Bahl topping Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep), 6-1, 6-3, at #3 to clinch the victory.
  • First-year Benjamin Kotzen (Austin, Texas/Austin Tennis Academy College Prep) battled in the second set at #4 before falling to Stavros Mastrogamvrakis, 6-1, 7-5.
  • The Judges finally scored a couple of points at the top of the latter. Grad student Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) knocked off Derin Acaraglu, 6-4, 6-2, at #1 singles, while first-year Daniel Shemesh (Modiin, Israel/Ironi Hey Modiin) won the day's only three-set match, 6-2, 4-6, 11-9, at #2.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will head to Altamonte Springs, Florida, next weekend for the UAA Tournament. Seeding will be determined early next week.
