#36 men's tennis sees four-game win streak snapped by #11 Babson, 5-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team saw its four-match winning streak snapped today as the 36th-ranked Judges dropped a 5-2 decision to #11 Babson in a contest started on the outdoor courts of the Cordish Tennis Center and concluded indoors in the Gosman Athletic Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Beavers took the top two doubles matches, 6-2 and 6-3, to earn the first point of the day. Brandeis sophomore Huasen Dong (Richmond Hill, Ont./Richmond Green Second School) and first-year Benjamin Kotzen (Austin, Texas/Austin Tennis Academy College Prep) picked up a 6-4 win at #3.
  • Babson won the first two singles matches at #4 and #5 before the rain came in to take a 3-0 lead. Sebastian Mendoza knocked off Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary School), 6-0, 6-2, at #5 and Wesley Zhang avenged his doubles loss to Dong, 6-1, 6-3, at #4.
  • Once indoors, former Brandeis player Alex Merson completed a 6-2, 6-2, win over sophomore Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) at #2 to clinch the win for the Beavers.
  • Mattias Harrell downed Kotzen, 7-5, 6-1, at #6 for Babson's final point.
  • Brandeis prevailed in the two longest matches. At #3, first-year Daniel Shemesh (Modiin, Israel/Ironi Hei Modiin) topped Edward Wang, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
  • At #1, Brandeis grad student Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) came from 4-0 down to win the first set from Brady Anderson, 7-5, but Anderson took the second set, 6-4. Walters prevailed in the third-set super-tiebreaker, 10-7, to improve to 10-2 in dual matches this season.
