Baseball swept by Emory

WALTHAM, Mass. – In a doubleheader reduced to seven-inning games, the Brandeis University baseball team dropped a pair of University Athletic Association contests to Emory, 11-1 in the opener and 11-10 in a wild finish in Game 2.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 10-20, 2-10 UAA.
  • Emory, 22-10, 8-4 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (Emory 11, Brandeis 1 – 6 innings)
  • Brandeis opened the scoring in Game 1, as first-year catcher Keith Lee (Milford, Mass./Milford) blasted his third home run of the season to right field with none on in the second inning.
  • Judge starter Eddie Zanor (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) escaped trouble in the first three innings, but couldn't do so in the fourth. After Emory loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a walk, Zanor got the second out on a force at home, but the Eagles bounced back with two two-run singles to take a 4-1 lead.
  • Two hits and an error gave Emory a 6-1 lead in the fifth, and the Eagles scored five runs on three hits, three walks, a hit batter and an error, against three Brandeis pitchers, to score five more and end the game an inning early with an 11-1 score.
  • Emory's Adam Geller improved to 3-3 on the hill, going six innings and allowing one earned run on six hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
  • Zanor fell to 0-5 on the campaign, giving up 10 hits and six runs (five earned) with four strikeouts and three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (Emory 11, Brandeis 10)
  • The Judges again got off to a fast start, taking a 4-0 lead after three innings.
  • First-year DH Danny Tambascia (Newton, Mass./Newton North) singled home a run in the second inning. In the third, Zanor doubled home two runs and scored on a single by sophomore LF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) to put Brandeis ahead, 4-0.
  • Emory climbed back into the game with two runs on five singles in the fourth, leaving the bases loaded against grad student starter Ryan Antrim (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest).
  • The Eagles' Matthew Sicoli doubled and scored on a failed pickoff play in the fifth to cut their deficit to one, 4-3.
  • Emory loaded the bases with one out in the sixth on a walk, a single and a hit batter, but Brandeis's Brady Lane (Hingham, Mass./Boston College H.S.) got a force at the plate and a liner to right to escape further damage. The Judges left a couple of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth as Lane attempted to earn his sixth save of the season.
  • Unfortunately, the Eagles put together a big inning in the top of the seventh, scoring eight runs on just four hits, but two walks, three hit batters and an error were key in allowing the Eagles to take an 11-4 lead.
  • The Judges did not go quietly in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with one out. Grad student Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) walked and first-year Bobby Quill (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham Reg.) singled to get Brandeis within 11-6.
  • After Emory got the first out of the inning on fly to left, Lee came up and delivered his second home run of the day, a grand slam that got the Judges within 11-10.
  • Emory got the second out on a grounder to first, but first-year Mano Boutsikakis (Astoria, N.Y./Xavier) walked and classmate Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) reached on a dropped third strike, putting the tying run in scoring position and the winning run on first.
  • Zanor followed up with a hot shot to first, but the Emory defender made a terrific diving stop to keep the ball from going down the line, ending the game.
  • Aronwald finished the game with a career-high-tying four hits, while Lee's four RBI were one shy of his career-best.
  • Lane suffered the loss on the hill, falling to 0-3, while Emory's Paul Fine improved to 3-0.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges head to St. Louis next weekend for four games at Washington University starting on Friday, April 18 at 4 pm (3 Central).
