Baseball falls in series finale with Chicago

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team dropped its University Athletic Association series finale with the University of Chicago today, 16-1, on Yetten Field in Waltham.

  • Chicago, 16-5, 4-0 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second game in a row, the Maroons defeated the Judges in seven innings because of the UAA's 10-run rule. The visitors outhit Brandeis, 18-5, and scored runs in five of their seven at-bats.
  • Chicago scored single runs in the first two innings, then exploded for four in the third, six in the fifth and four more in the sixth inning.
  • All nine Maroons had at least one hit, with five of them picking up multiple hits.
  • UC 1B Max Wiesner was the big batter for the visitors. He went 2-4 with two runs scored and six RBI. Wiesner plated the Maroons' first run with a ground out in the first inning, then hit a two-run home run in the third and a three-run blast in the fifth. The homers were his third and fourth of the season.
  • Wiesner nearly had a third round-tripper in the fourth inning, but was robbed in the fourth by Brandeis sophomore CF Connor Crowley (Guiford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven), who went over the fence to deny Wiesner.
  • Leadoff hitter Braden Jirovic went 4-5 with an RBI, three runs scored, and three stolen bases. The Maroons were 8-for-8 stealing bases today.
  • Brandeis' lone run came in the third inning when 2B Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) led of with a bunt single and two batters later scored when first-year Mano Boutsikakis (Astoria, N.Y./Xavier) singled up the middle.   
  • Brandeis first-year Rohan Shah (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) suffered the loss on the hill, giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits, a walk and a hit batter. He struck out two in three innings of work, falling to 1-1 on the season.
  • Chicago's Russell Kwinter improved to 3-0 on the campaign. He threw six innings of five hit ball, allowing one earned run. He struck out two and walked one.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges are off until next weekend when they head to New York to meet NYU for a four-game UAA set starting on April 4 on Staten Island. The Violets dropped 3 of 4 at Emory this weekend.
