CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team earned a second-straight victory over a nationally-ranked opponent today, with the Judges edging #14 Gustavus Adolphus College at Harvard's Murr Tennis Center.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 5-4.
  • Gustavus Adolphus, 9-9, ranked #14 in Division III by ITA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges started by winning the doubles point in comeback fashion. After GAC won, 6-4, at #1, sophomore Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and first-year Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary School) picked up a 6-3 win at #2.
  • In the decisive match, sophomore Huasen Dong (Richmond Hill, Ont./Richmond Green Second School) and first-year Benjamin Kotzen (Austin, Texas/Austin Tennis Academy College Prep) outlasted their Gusties' opponents in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6), to give Brandeis a 1-0 lead.
  • GAC evened things up with a 6-1, 6-0, win at #5 singles, but Garbett put Brandeis back on top at #4, 6-2, 6-3.
  • Grad student Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) earned a 6-4, 6-3, win at #1 singles to put Brandeis within a point of victory at 3-1, but Gustavus Adolphus won at #6 to avoid defeat with two matches to go.
  • Dong earned the clinching victory at #3, 6-4, 6-3, before GAC won the final match of the day, 7-5, 7-5, at #2.
  • This was just the second-ever meeting between Brandeis and Gustavus Adolphus, with the Judges picking up a 6-3 win at the ITA Indoor Nationals tournament in 2022.
  • The Judges have now won five of their last six matches, including the last two against top-30 opponents, to get above .500.
