ATLANTA, Ga. – Brandeis softball graduate student
Haley Nash (Delmar, New York/Bethlehem Central) tied the Judges' career home run record, but a couple of big innings proved to be the difference today in a University Athletic Association doubleheader, as host #23 Emory took two from visiting Brandeis, 13-3 and 6-2.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 1-14, 0-3 UAA.
- Emory: 16-2, 3-0 UAA, ranked #23 in Division III by National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1: Emory 13, Brandeis 3
- The Eagles started off strong at the bottom of the first inning scoring four runs. Ashley Chu started with a walk then stole second base. Chu scored from a single to right field. Ella Hoyle singled to right then took advantage of a throwing error to advance to second. With a runner on second and third base, a groundout scored a run and advanced the runner. Shivani Nangia hit a double which scored Hoyle. To finish the inning, Nangia scored on a fielding error by the shortstop, making it 4-0.
- To start the second inning, Nash hit a home run putting the Judges on the scoreboard. Nash's first home run of the season tied Melissa Jones '99 for Brandeis's career record at #31.
- The Eagles earned back the run with a double to left by Chu and a sacrifice fly to center field to score her.
- Emory kept up the momentum in the third inning scoring another two runs, starting the inning with a walk, and a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner. A single and a steal left runners on second and third. A wild pitch scored a run and advanced the runners. Chu singled to left scoring the last run of the inning, making it 7-1.
- In the fourth inning, Emory scored six runs to get them to 13-1 and putting the game on the eight-run rule clock..
- In the top of the fifth inning, the Judges' got two runs back as first-year Jordan Wallace (Howell, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall, Conn.) reached on an error by the infield. Junior Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif./San Juan Hills) singled to right and advanced on a throwing error, scoring Wallace. Sophomore Katie Baydian (Massapequa, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Acad.) doubled to left center and Wallace advanced to third. Finishing the scoring, sophomore Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled to right, which brought home Baydian, but Brandeis was unable to get any closer to avoid the run rule.
- Grad student Kathryn Vermulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) fell to 0-4 in the circle. She allowed five runs and walked two, throwing just over one inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2: Emory 6, Brandeis 2
- After a no score until the third inning, Emory came out with their bats hot. With back-to-back singles and an out by fielders choice, Chu hit another single, loading the bases. A walk sent the first run home. Ellie Zarr singled to left, scoring another two runs. A groundout advanced runners, and Nangia followed with a three run home run to make it, 6-0.
- With no action until the fifth inning, Brandeis's junior SS Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) started off with a double. Senior Tristian Boyer (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) reached on a fielders choice as Burdenski got back to second base. Senior Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass./Marianapolis Prep) placed a crucial sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. With runners in scoring position, Baydian singled through left, scoring Burdenski. To end the scoring, Manes had a sacrifice flyout to score Boyer.
- Junior Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) fell to 0-3 in the circle with three innings pitched, six hits, and three walks allowed.
UP NEXT
- The Judges will play a non-conference doubleheader against UMass Dartmouth at 3 PM on Tuesday, before hosting their first home UAA series of the season next weekend against NYU.
