Men's tennis sweeps #30 Southwestern for first ranked win of season

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team defeated a top-40 ranked team for the first time in three tries today, doing so in convincing fashion as they defeated the visiting #30 Southwestern University Pirates, 7-0.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 4-0.
  • Southwestern, 6-3, ranked #30 in Division III by Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges started things off indoors in the Gosman Center by winning all three doubles matches, 6-2, 6-3 and 7-5, to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The teams moved outside to the Cordish Tennis Center for singles action. Sophomore Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) opened things up with a 6-3, 7-5 win at #4.
  • First-year Daniel Shemesh (Modiin, Israel/Ironi Hey Modiin) brought the Judges one win from victory with a 6-1, 6-3, win at #2.
  • Grad student Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) clinched things at #1 singles, 7-5, 6-2.
  • The Judges took the final three matches in three sets, twice coming from a set down.
  • At #5, first-year Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary School) triumphed, 6-2, 2-6, 10-4, while sophomore Huasen Dong (Richmond Hill, Ont./Richmond Green Second School) won, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
  • First-year Benjamin Kotzen (Austin, Texas/Austin Tennis Academy College Prep) completed the sweep at #6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
  • This was the first-ever meeting between Brandeis and Southwestern.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will take on 14th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College tomorrow at 1 p.m.  in a match that will be played at Harvard University's Murr Courts.
