WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University sophomore
Andrew Tringe (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) turned in his second-straight strong start, keeping visiting Wentworth off the board for six innings as he and three Judge relievers blanked the Leopards, 6-0, on Stein Diamond today.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 6-8.
- Wentworth, 3-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Judges would get all the scoring they would need when they batted around in the bottom of the first inning. They scored four times on three hits, an error and two walks.
- Brandeis got on the board just three batters into the game, when first-year 3B Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by grad student 1B Eddie Zanor (Brandford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven).
- Two batters later, sophomore LF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) singled up the middle to plate Zanor.
- After Wentworth starter Alec Peruzzi issued two walks to load the bases, Judge grad student LF Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) singled through the right side to bring in two runs and give Brandeis a 4-0 lead.
- That was all Tringe needed, as he cruised through the first three innings allowing only one base runner.
- Wentworth put two runners on in fourth on their first two hits of the game, but Tringe got a grounder to second to end the threat. A single and a stolen base with one out gave the Leopards some hope in the fifth, but Tringe got a pair of whiffs to escape, while a hit batter, a walk, and a chopper at plate put two more in scoring position in the sixth before a lazy fly to center ended the inning and Tringe's outing.
- The visitors threatened against the Brandeis bullpen in the seventh, loading the bases with one out against grad student Ryan Antrim (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest). Local product Jack Sweeney (Waltham, Mass./Austin Prep) came in from the bullpen and got a grounder to third against a pulled-in infield that forced a runner at home, and a fly to right ended the threat.
- Brandeis added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double by first-year DH Danny Tambascia (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and another in the eighth on a single by sophomore CF Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven), while Sweeney and first-year Brady Lane (Hingham, Mass./Boston College HS) shut down the Leopards to complete the shutout.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Tringe earned his first collegiate win in his 10th start. He tied his career-long outing, going six innings, and struck out a career-high eight batters. He walked two and allowed three hits.
- In addition to eight Ks, nine of Tringe's other 10 outs came on ground balls. He threw 98 pitches, 56 for strikes.
- Offensively, Kuja, Zanor and Freed each had two hits. Kuja led the team with two runs scored, and Freed drove in two.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis improved to 20-5 all-time against Wentworth, including five of the last six meetings.
- This was the Judges' first shutout since March 5, 2023, when they opened the season with a 5-0 win over Wheaton College.
- With the win, Brandeis has equaled its win total from last season.
