Men's tennis breaks into win column, 5-2, over Occidental

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team earned its first win of the season on Friday with a 5-2 victory over Occidental College to close out their February trip to California.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges got on the board by taking the doubles point. Grad student Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) and first-year Daniel Shemesh (Modiin, Israel/Ironi Hei Modiin) steamrolled their opponents, 6-1, at #1.
  • First-years Benjamin Kotzen (Austin, Texas/Austin Tennis Academy College Prep) and Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary School) clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at #3, while the Tigers earned a win at #2 to avoid the sweep.
  • In singles action, the Judges win four straight-set matches to finish off the victory.
  • Sophomore Huasen Dong (Richmond Hill, Ont./Richmond Green Second School) opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #5, and Wang-Fan followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at #4.
  • Walters clinched the victory at #1 with a 6-1, 6-2, win, while Shemesh picked up a 6-2, 6-4, win at #2 for the Judges' last point.
  • Sophomore Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) battled back at #3 before falling, 1-6, 6-2, 5-7, while Kotzen was involved in a marathon third-set super tiebreaker at #6, falling 6-3, 5-7, 11-13.
