SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Brandeis University baseball team scored twice and got the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but the Judges couldn't quite complete their comeback as they dropped a 6-4 decision at Sewanee, the University of the South, today in Tennessee.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 1-2.
- Sewanee, 4-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sewanee got on the board early, with their first three batters getting hits. A wild pitch with runners on first and second and catcher Ethan Williams at the plate allowed him to drive in two runs. Williams was thrown out trying to take second after the throw from center went to the plate, and Brandeis sophomore Andrew Tringe (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) escaped further trouble in the frame.
- Tringe settled down and kept the Tigers off the board for the next five innings, allowing the Judges to climb back into the game.
- In the third, Brandeis loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, and sophomore CF Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) scored on a wild pitch, giving him a run in his third-straight contest. The Judges loaded the bases again with one out, but Sewanee induced a double play to get out of the inning.
- Brandeis evened things up in the top of the sixth, when Crowley led off with a double to left-center. First-year 3B Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) singled to right to knot the score at 2-2, but the Judges left the bases loaded.
- The home team reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning when pinch hitter Will Jennewein singled with two outs and scored after 3B Alden Wright's single got past the Brandeis right fielder for a two-base error.
- Sewanee added two more runs in the seventh and one in the eighth, runs that would prove necessary as Brandeis rallied in the top of the ninth.
- First-year catcher Keith Lee (Milford, Mass./Milford) singled to start the frame, and sophomore 2B Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) followed suit to get two runners on with no outs.
- Back-to-back wild pitches brought Lee home and put Walsh on third. After a walk, first-year RF Bobby Quill (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham Reg.) grounded into a fielder's choice that got Brandeis within 6-4 and allowed the tying run to come to the plate.
- Sewanee reliever Joey Crews got the final two outs on a called third strike and a grounder to second to give the Tigers their fourth-straight win to start the season.
TOP BRANDEIS PERFORMERS
- Crowley's double was the Judges' only extra-base hit, while Walsh's 2-4 performance was their only multi-hit game.
- After his tough first frame, Tringe settled down to go five innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked just one.
- Sophomore Kyle Murray (West Roxbury, Mass./Boston Latin) took the loss, giving up four hits, two walks and three runs (two earned) in two innings of work.
