Kennedy, women's hoops rally past Swarthmore, 58-51

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team outscored visiting Swarthmore College, 18-8, in the final quarter as the Judges erased a three-point deficit to defeat the Garnet, 58-51, in the final game of the Brandeis Invitational presented by the Park Lodge Hotel Group.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams got off to a slow start in the first period, with the Judges taking a slim 12-9 lead after 10 minutes. The two sides combined to shoot just 20 percent from the field (7-of-35) in the stanza, including 0-of-13 from 3-point range.
  • Brandeis senior Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) scored 10 of the Judges' 12 points in the stanza, hitting 4-of-8 from the field and 2-of-4 from the line. Swarthmore's Catherine Chadwell accounted for six of her side's nine points.
  • Brandeis led, 25-20, midway through the second quarter, but SC closed on a 13-4 run to take a 33-29 lead into the locker room.
  • Garnet sophomore Claire Mathews, a transfer from Brandeis, made the big difference in the period, hitting 3-of-3 from downtown to score nine points in the period, all during their final push.
  • The visitors maintained their lead through the third quarter, as the advantage bounced between two and five points.
  • Brandeis junior Carlie Marrella (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) hit a late bucket to close the deficit to 43-40 entering the fourth.
  • The lead changed hands three times with two ties in the final 10 minutes.
  • The Garnet took a 51-49 lead with 4:55 left on the clock on a 3-pointer from Lily Czub, but the Judges held the visitors scoreless the rest of the way.
  • Brandeis scored the next three points from the line with Kennedy hitting a pair with 3:25 remaining to give the hosts the lead for good.
  • Brandeis held Swarthmore to 0-8 from the field over the final four minutes with two turnovers as the Judges scored the final nine points of the contest.
  • Kennedy and senior Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) took over in the fourth, scoring 14 of the Judges' 18 points, with Kennedy's eight points as many as the entire Garnet team.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kennedy finished with 23 points, finishing two shy of her career-best. She hit 9-of-16 from the field, including 9-of-11 inside the arc, and 5-of-8 from the line. Kennedy also had five rebounds and three assists.
  • Vaughan added her second-straight double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. It was the fifth double-double of her career.
  • Junior Maya Williams (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) added 10 rebounds, five on the offensive glass for her second-straight game in double figures. Brandeis outrebounded Swarthmore, 52-38.
  • Junior Sofia Berisha (Old Tappan, N.J./Winchendon School) led the Judges with four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
  • The Garnet were topped by 15 points from Chadwell and 14 from Mathews, who hit four 3-pointers. Chadwell also led the visitors with 11 rebounds, while Vianna Kanyamiheto-Watson had a game-high five assists.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges, who have won their first two games for the first time since 2021-22 will look to improve to 3-0 on Nov. 13 against Rhode Island College.
