Leroy's two assist game helps #23 women past JWU, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team got two first-half goals on assists from first-year Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School) and the Judges survived a late goal to defeat visiting Johnson and Wales University, 2-1, on Gordon Field today.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 6-1.
  • Johnson & Wales, 5-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges and Wildcats came in with two of the top scoring offenses in Division III, with JWU ranking fifth, averaging 4.50 goals per game and Brandeis ranking ninth at 3.83 goals per game.
  • Brandeis found the net twice in the first half thanks to Leroy. In the 18th minute, Leroy sent a perfect through-ball to first-year Laurene Creteau (Madison, N.J./Madison), who split two defenders down the left side of the field and beat a diving JWU keeper.
  • The goal was Creteau's third of the season and the assist was Leroy's first of her collegiate career.
  • Brandeis doubled its lead in the 28th minute when Leroy's run down the right side of the field ended with a cross into the box. Junior reserve Madison Sansone (Westport, Conn./Staples), having just entered the game, ran on to the ball and one-timed it into the net for her first of the season and the second of her career.
  • The Judges were within five minutes of handing JWU its second-straight shutout, but the Wildcats got on the board late. Off a set piece deep in the offensive end, JWU's Katie Gallagher sent the free kick into the box. It bounced in the air before the Wildcats' Madison Sanborn got it to Jessica Lee, who headed it home for her second of the season.
  • The Judges held off the the visitors from there, with Brandeis grad transfer Rachel Ross (Portchester, N.Y./Somers) denying Lee's effort in the 89th minute to preserve the one-goal lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis outshot Johnson & Wales, 13-9 for the game, including 6-4 in shots on goal.
  • Ross had three saves in the winning effort for the Judges. JWU's Leah Bragaw allowed both goals and had a save in the first half, while Carly McCrumb made three stops for the Wildcats in the second.
  • JWU's two losses, which have come in the last two games, came at the hands of #4 MIT and #23 Brandeis. After outscoring their first five opponents, 27-2, they were outscored 6-1 in the last two.
  • The Judges' 6-1 start is their highest win total through seven games since 2018.
