Baseball bats stymied by Wheaton on Senior Day

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team finished its 2024 season today with a 2-0 loss at the hands of Wheaton College on Stein Diamond.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 6-31.
  • Wheaton: 18-12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • This pitcher's duel was decided in the third inning. With one out, Wheaton CF AJ Guindon and 3B Casey Wensley singled. Brandeis senior starter Sean Decker-Jacoby (Los Angeles, Calif./Vistimar) got the second out of the inning with a fly to right, but issued a walk to load the bases.
  • DH Kevin Matos delivered a seeing-eye single up the middle, plating the only two runs of the game. He moved to second when the throw home went awry, but Decker-Jacoby got a fly to center to end the threat.
  • That was all the Lyons' pitching staff needed, as six pitchers allowed just one hit, a single by first-year DH Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) that dropped down the leftfield line in the fifth inning.
  • Brandeis did draw five walks and have a hit batter. The Judges had two runners on in the sixth and seventh innings, but Wheaton got a two-out strikeout to end the sixth.
  • The seventh was Brandeis's best chance, when the first two hitters reached on a hit batter and a walk, but Jack Feltovic came on to get a strikeout for the first out of the inning. Brandeis first-year shortstop Matt Chafin (Canton, Mass./Canton) followed with a line drive to center than was snared off the ground by Wheaton's Guindon, who erased the runner at second who had ventured too far from the bag.
  • Wheaton's Liam Goldthwaite came on an struck out five of the six batters he faced to close out the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Decker-Jacoby pitched well in his final game, allowing seven hits and just two earned runs over 6.1 innings of work. He struck out six and walked just one, throwing 103 pitches, 63 for strikes. Decker-Jacob falls to 1-8.
  • First-year Dimitri Skourides (Arlington, Mass./Winchendon School) held the Lyons hitless over the last 2.2 innings, allowing one walk and striking out four.
  • Six Wheaton pitchers combined for the one-hitter. Greg Strite got the start, going three innings with four strikeouts and no walks to earn his first collegiate win, improving to 1-0.
