Ragini Kannan blanks Tartans in opener

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Brandeis University softball team hit four home runs and got a pair of terrific pitching performances in a University Athletic Association sweep of Carnegie Mellon on the road today. The Judges won Game 1, 4-0, and Game 2, 8-2.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 8-9, 4-2 UAA.
  • Carnegie Mellon: 8-10, 2-4 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1: 4-0, Brandeis
  • The Judges' first three runs came thanks to the bat of senior 3B Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central). In the top of the first, she delivered a two-run double.
  • In the fourth, Nash blasted her team-leading fifth home run of the season to left-center field. It was the 24th home run of her career, moving Nash into sole possession of third on Brandeis's career list.
  • Nash scored the Judges' fourth run in the sixth inning, coming home on an outfield error struck by junior catcher Tristan Boyer (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield).
  • The offense was plenty for sophomore pitcher Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy. Kannan limited CMU to six hits in seven innings as she improved to 5-3 on the season.
  • Kannan struck out 10 Tartan batters, for her fourth career game with double-digit Ks. She walked just one. The shutout was the fifth of her career.
  • Nash was the Judges' big hitter for the game, going 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, a double and a home run. She also walked once, reaching base in three of her four plate appearances.
  • CMU's Amanda Smith took the loss, falling to 6-2 on the season. She went seven innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on just four hits, but walked three. She had seven strikeouts.
  • Catcher Kyr Brenneman had two hits and a double for the Tartans, while CF Kiera Boucher also went 2-3 with a stolen base.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2: 8-2, Brandeis
  • The Judges drilled three home runs en route to victory in the second game.
  • After Carnegie Mellon took a 1-0 lead on a single by May Goodwin in the bottom of the first, Brandeis took the lead for good in the top of the third.
  • With two away, sophomore CF Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) homered to centerfield to tie the game at 1-all. After classmate RF Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif./San Juan Hills) drew a walk, junior SS Anna Kolb (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) blasted a two-run shot to right-center. It was Kolb's second homer of the season.
  • CMU's Boucher got the Tartans within one by leading off the bottom of the third with a home run to left, but that was all the scoring the hosts would get.
  • Brandeis senior pitcher Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) gave up a double later in the inning, but went on to retired the next 11 batters in a row.
  • Cohen gave up a single in the sixth, but sophomore LF Elle Ehrlich (Falls Church, Va./Meridian) cut down the hitter trying to extend the hit into a double. The Tartans also had a hit in the seventh, but it was erased on a double play.
  • Meanwhile the Judges put the game away with four runs in the fourth, thanks to an RBI double by junior 2B Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass./Marianapolis Prep) and a three-run home run by Burdenski. It was Burdenski's first career multi-homer game, giving her five blasts on the season and the ninth of her career.
  • Cohen helped her own cause with an RBI double in the fifth inning that made it 8-2 and concluded the scoring.
  • In the circle, Cohen improved to 3-6 in the circle. She went seven innings for her sixth complete game of the season and the 21st of her career. Cohen allowed six hits and two earned run, walking one without a strikeout. She faced just five batters over the minimum, throwing 81 pitches.
  • Burdenski matched her season- and career-high with four RBI, going 2-4 with two runs scored, and two homers.
  • Six of Brandeis's eight hits went for extra bases, with Kolb adding her home run and Cohen, Boyer and Doiron contributing doubles.
  • CMU's Haley Pucci fell to 1-3 in the circle, allowing seven hits and seven earned runs in four innings of work. She struck out three and walked two.
  • Six different Tartan players had their six hits.
