ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The eighth-seeded Brandeis University men's tennis team dropped its University Athletic Association tournament quarterfinal to top-seeded and second-ranked University of Chicago, 5-0, today, at Sanlando Park.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 1-14.
- Chicago: 17-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Judges' limited roster started them in a 2-0 hole, unable to contest third doubles or sixth singles.
- Both doubles matches saw teams battle back from early deficits. At #2, Brandeis rookies Harrison Huai (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) and Huason Dong (Richmond Hill, Ont./Richmond Green Second School) won the first four games of the eight-game pro-set, but the Maroons' Derek Hsieh and Robert Zhang stormed back to win eight games in a row for the 8-4 win.
- At #1, it was the reverse, as Chicago's Andrei Leonov and Pat Otero went ahead 4-0 against Brandeis senior Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md. Gilman School) and first-year Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep). Walters and Garbett answered by getting the set back on serve at 4-all. The teams traded holds to get to 6-5 in favor of UC when the Maroons got another break to take a 7-5 lead. Chicago held in the final game for the 8-5 win.
- In singles action, Chicago won all five first sets, with Hsieh taking down Garbett, 6-2, 6-0, at #2 for the match-clinching victory.
UP NEXT
- Brandeis will meet fifth-seed and 27th-ranked Carnegie Mellon tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. in the consolation semifinals. Chicago will face fourth-seeded and 12-ranked Washington University in the championship semis.
