Softball honors seniors but falls to #10 Case, 8-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team honored its three seniors before their University Athletic Association series finale with #10 Case Western Reserve  today, but the Spartans hung on for an 8-4 win to complete the series sweep.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 13-18, 5-11 UAA.
  • Case Western Reserve: 28-5, 13-3 UAA, ranked #10 in Division III by the NFCA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams scored twice in the first inning. CWRU got RBI singles from LF Stevie Rieger and 3B Elizabeth Berry in the top of the frame.
  • In the bottom of the inning, senior Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) drilled her team-leading ninth home run of the season to straight-away centerfield with a runner on to knot the game at 2-all.
  • The homer was Nash's 28th of her career, moving her into a tie for second on the Judges' career list.
  • The Spartans blew things open with a four-run fourth inning. They executed a double steal of home to take a 3-2 lead. Shortstop Karen Potts followed with a two-run home run, her third of the series. The next batter, 2B KaiLi Gross, made it back-to-back homers to give the visitors a 6-2 advantage.
  • Brandeis junior shortstop Anna Kolb (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) had an RBI single in the fifth and a run-producing groundout in the seventh, but Case catcher Katelyn Lamm had a two-run hit in between, making the final score 8-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • CWRU outhit Brandeis, 13-7, with the top four hitters the Spartan lineup all going 2-4 with five combined runs and five RBI. Potts drove in two, while Gross scored twice. Lamm was also 2-4 with two RBI.
  • Nash was the Judges' top hitter, going 2-4 with two RBI, one run scored and her home run. Kolb also had two RBI for Brandeis.
  • Brandeis senior Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) threw a complete game, allowing 13 hits and eight earned runs. She struck out three and walked one, falling to 5-10 on the season.
  • Lexi Miskey improved to 16-3 on the season for the Spartans, allowing three hits and one earned run in four innings of work. She fanned seven and walked one.
SENIOR DAY
  • Before the game, the Judges honored their three graduating seniors
  • All three will be attending Brandeis for graduate school, with Nash returning to use an extra year of elibility granted because of COVID-19.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will face another ranked opponent, #14 Tufts University, on Wednesday at 4 p.m. This will be a single game.
