Huai wins at #5, but men's tennis falls to #10 Tufts, 8-1

MEDFORD, Mass. – First-year player Harrison Huai (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) picked up a win at #5 singles, but the visiting Brandeis University men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to #10-ranked Tufts in their final match before the University Athletic Association tournament next week.

  • Tufts: 12-5, ranked #10 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Jumbos got off to a fast start, winning #1 and #2 doubles by 8-1 scores, while the Judges did not field a #3 team.
  • In singles action, the Jumbos went up 4-0 when the Judges did not have a sixth-singles player.
  • Huai earned Brandeis's lone point at #5 singles with a 6-3, 6-2, win.
  • Tufts earned straight-set wins at #1, 6-2, 6-2, and #3, 6-1, 7-6, to finish off the victory.
  • In a pair of three-setters, first-year Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) lost at #2, 6-2, 3-6, 3-6, while senior Aaron Basye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tesoro) suffered a 4-6, 6-4, 6-10 loss at #4, with the final set being a super tiebreaker.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will open the University Athletic Association tournament next weekend in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Seeding will be announced early next week.
