WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team dropped both ends of a University Athletic Association doubleheader today against visiting Emory University. The Eagles took the opener, 4-3, in eight innings, and won the nightcap, 12-7. The games were played at Bentley University's Turf Field because of wet field conditions at Brandeis.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 11-13, 5-6 UAA.
- Emory: 18-13, 4-7 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (4-3, Emory, 8 innings)
- The Judges broke the ice in the second inning on RBI singles by first-year 1B Brooke Boehmer () and senior 2B Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass./Marianapolis Prep).
- Emory evened things up in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by DP Ellie Zerr and a fielder's choice by 1B Ella Hoyle that saw center fielder Paige Nellis beat the throw home.
- Both pitching staffs settled down after that, not allowing a runner past second base through the end of the seventh inning, sending the game into extra innings for the second game in a row.
- In the top of the eighth, Emory shortstop Grace Cooper led off with a double, and two batters later, Zerr clubbed her UAA-leading eighth home run of the season to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead. Brandeis starter Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) left two more runners on base headed into the Judges' last at-bat.
- Brandeis took advantage of a lead-off error, scoring three batters later on an RBI single by senior DP Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) that made it 4-3, but Emory's Georgia Pineda secured the final out to even the series at 1-1.
- Kannan took the loss in the circle, falling to 7-5 on the season. She threw an eight-inning complete game and allowed nine hits and four earned runs, striking out three without a walk. Pineda improved to 4-2, also tossed an eight-inning CG, allowing six hits and three runs, only one of which was earned. She struck out two, walked two and hit a batter.
- Emory's Cooper led all players with three hits, including a double and two runs scored. Zerr drove in three of Emory's four runs.
- Sophomore LF Elle Ehrlich (Falls Church, Va./Meridian) had two hits for Brandeis, including a double, their only extra-base hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (12-7, Emory)
- The Eagles were on top from the beginning, scoring seven runs in the first two innings.
- The big blows in the first two frames were a two-run home run from Zerr in the first, her second of the series and ninth of the season, and a two-run single by Hoyle in the second that put the visitors ahead, 7-0.
- Brandeis got the game's next four runs, thanks to an RBI single by sophomore CF Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and a two-run hit by Cohen in the second, followed by an RBI single from Doirin in the third that cut the deficit to 7-3.
- The Judges were unlucky in the third when the final out was made when a batted ball hit a runner.
- The Eagles responded by scoring two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings, the last two runs coming on a Nellis single to center that made it 11-4.
- The Judges loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the fifth and cashed in for three runs, including an RBI walk by Doiron, a sacrifice fly by senior Chickie Elbaz (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) and a single by Burdenski that made it 11-7. Brandeis left two runners on and were unable to score again, while Emory tacked on one run in the seventh when Nellis's groundout scored Ashley Chu two batters after Chu tripled.
- Cohen suffered the loss, falling to 4-8 on the season, while Lexi Bach earned the win for Emory with four innings of effective relief.
- Five different Brandeis players registered two-hit games, while Burdenski, Cohen and Doiron all had two RBI.
- Nellis led all players with four RBI, while Chu had four hits in five at-bats and scored three runs. Zerr went 2-5 with a double, a homer and three RBI.
