Baseball drops 26-5 decision at Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team scored five runs in one inning today, but it wasn't enough to counter three bat-around innings from host Tufts University today in a 26-5 victory by the Jumbos.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 1-3.
  • Tufts: 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Jumbos scored in all but one of their eight at-bats, plating single runs in the first two innings before blowing things open with a 10-run third.
  • The hosts added three more runs in the fourth before Brandeis finally got on the board with their five-run fifth. Tufts responded with their second bat-around of the game, scoring five of their own in the bottom of the frame. They finished the scoring with two in the sixth and four in the seventh, their final bat-around of the game.
  • Brandeis scored their five runs on just two hits, a lead-off double by sophomore catcher CJ Dunston (New Bedford, Mass / New Bedford) and a two-run single by grad student 1B Eddie Zanor (Branford, Conn. / Notre Dame-West Haven).
  • Two other runs came home on bases-loaded walks by first-year pinch-hitter Patrick Schultz (Milton, Mass. / Roxbury Latin) and classmate Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass. / Arlington), and another scored on a sacrifice fly by first-year Mano Boutsikakis (Astoria, N.Y. / Xavier).
  • Tufts' 26 runs came on 23 hits and 11 walks.
  • Jumbos' leadoff hitter Malcolm Whitfield scored five runs, while four different players had three RBI. Patrick Solomon and AJ Lysko each hit home runs for the home team.
  • Brandeis senior Sean Decker-Jacoby (Los Angeles, Calif. / Vistimar) suffered the loss on the hill, giving up seven hits and seven runs (six earned) in 2.1 innings of work. He walked three and struck out one.
  • In addition to his two RBI, Zanor had the most effective relief outing of any Brandeis player, giving up two hits but striking out all five of his outs in 1.2 innings in the seventh and eighth innings.
  • Tufts starter Silas Reed struck out seven in his 4.1 innings, allowing just one hit, but walking five.
  • Senior Hunter Beindorff worked a scoreless sixth inning to earn the win in relief.
