#21 women's tennis upended by #34 Colby, 5-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – The #21 Brandeis University women's tennis team dropped a back-and-forth match today with #34 Colby College, as the Mules emerged with a 5-4 upset at the Cordish Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges got off to a quick start, winning the first two doubles matches. First-years Mandy Reyes (Barcelona, Spain / Laurel Springs School) and Nancy Zhang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai International) rolled to an 8-2 win at #2, while sophomore Rebecca Suarez (Huntington, N.Y. / International Virtual Learning Academy) and junior Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) outlasted their foes at #1, 8-6.
  • A key match was contested at #3, where Colby' Ellie Gershaw and Amelie Gal rallied to defeat Brandeis first-year Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India/Aavishkar School) and junior Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion), 8-7, taking the tiebreaker by a 7-2 score, keeping Brandeis's lead at 2-1 entering singles play.
  • The Mules went ahead, 3-2, by winning the first two singles matches at #5 and #6 in straight sets.
  • Brandeis pushed back into the lead as the next two singles matches completed. Junior Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece / Anatolia College) won at #4, 6-2, 6-4, while first-year Lika Bolkvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia/The European School-American High School) used a couple of late breaks in each set for a 6-4, 6-4, win at #3, to go back on top, 4-3.
  • The Mules pulled out the upset by winning the final two matches. At #2, Gershaw edged Zhang in the first set, 7-6, taking the tiebreaker, 8-6, before rolling to a 6-2 win in the second.
  • Colby secured the win at #1, where senior Sam Riordan knocked off Budhbhatti, who was playing just her second match of the season at the top spot with Suarez and junior Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India / Kumkum School) out for singles play. Budhbhatti won the first set, 6-2, but Riordan came back for the next two, 6-4, 6-2, to earn the win.
UP NEXT
  • Brandeis will hit the road on Thursday afternoon to meet their third top-10 opponent of the season, #5 Wesleyan University, at 3 p.m.
