WALTHAM, Mass. -- The #34 Brandeis men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 defeat at the hands of #20 RPI today in the Judges' first match of the season played outdoors in the Cordish Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brandeis started off with a doubles loss, falling 8-1, at #2.
- The Judges battled back and won #3 from a stellar performance by senior Aaron Basye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tesoro) and rookie Harrison Huai (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) by a score of 8-6, which leveled the overall score at 1-1.
- The #1 doubles match was a turning point. First-year Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and senior Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) battled the Engineers' duo of Aiden Drover-Mattinen and Andy Zhu, ranked #9 in Division III, to a tiebreaker, but fell, 7-4, giving the Engineers the 2-1 lead.
- In singles action, the Engineers won five of six matches. Sophomore Alex Merson (Palisades Park, N.J./Tenafly) knocked off Zhu, 6-2, 6-4, at #3 to get Brandeis within 3-2, but RPI's wins at #5 and #5 secured the victory.
- Garbett and Walters battled their opponents to three sets at #4 and #1, respectively, but both fell in the third. Garbett lost, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6, while Walters went to a super tiebreaker in the third, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 4-10.
