WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team saw graduate student
Francesca Marchese (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) set a program record for 3-pointers today as the Judges dropped their season finale to top-ranked and University Athletic Association champions NYU, 81-54, in Red Auerbach Arena.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 5-20, 1-13 UAA.
- NYU: 25-0, 14-0 UAA, ranked #1 in Division III by D3hoops.com and the WBCA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Violets took control of the game early, outscoring Brandeis, 22-8, in the first quarter. They hit 10-of-22 from the field (46%), while Brandeis hit just 3-of-12 (25%).
- Brandeis was competitive in the second period, as the teams were tied at 18-all in the stanza and 40-26 at halftime.
- The Judges shot 4-of-7 from 3-point range in the second to keep pace with the Violets, with Marchese hitting her first trifecta of the day and first-year guard Claire Candela (Maynard, Mass./Milton Academy) dialing long distance twice.
- NYU pulled away in the second half by outscoring Brandeis, 17-11 in the third period and 24-17 in the fourth.
- Marchese tied Camila Casanueva '22 for Brandeis's career 3-point record with the first basket of the second half, off an assist from junior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham).
- She broke the record on another Ohm assist off a fast-break by Brandeis with 9:07 to play in the fourth.
- Marchese added one more trifecta with 6:57 to go in regulation to bring her final career total to 171 3-pointers.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Marchese and Ohm were the Judges' two leading scorers, each notching 12 points. Marchese was 4-for-5 overall and from 3-point range, while Ohm was 5-for-14 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line.
- The pair also finished with five rebounds, one shy of sophomore Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford), who had six for team-high honors.
- Ohm had a team- and game-high four assists.
- Vaughan, who scored nine points, also had one blocked shot, bringing her single-season record total to 40.
- NYU put four starters in double digits in scoring, paced by Belle Pellecchia's game-high 20 points. She also had eight rebounds to lead all players and three steals.
- Megan Bauman added 17 points, Caroline Peper had 16 and Natalie Bruns had 12 points, eight boards and team-highs of three assists and two steals.
- The Violets won the turnover battle, 16-9, and turned it into a 21-9 advantage in points off those miscues. They also had a 38-29 lead in rebounding, including 12-5 on the offensive glass.
SENIOR DAY
- Before the contest, Brandeis honored their two players making their final appearance in Auerbach Arena, Marchese and guard Selenya Gonzalez (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central), who was unable to play due to injury.
