Xiao sets 100-IM record on Day 3 of Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. – On the third and final day of action at the WPI Gompei Invitational on Sunday, the Brandeis University swimming and diving teams saw one school record broken and a pair of top-three finishes. The Judges had eight top-10 finishes and five program top-10s on the final day of competition, as they finished with 2563 points in the combined event, good for sixth place among the 10 teams.
SCHOOL RECORD
  • The Judges' school record came in the men's 100-yard individual medley, where two different Brandeis swimmers exceeded the previous all-time best. Junior Eric Xiao (College Station, Texas/AM Consolidated) edged classmate Benjamin Lee (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) by one-hundredth of a second for the program mark with a time of 52.60 seconds.
  • The two Judges finished in third and fourth place, respectively tied for the best by a Brandeis swimmer at the meet.
TOP THREE PERFORMANCE
  • Junior Sam Bundy (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) turned in the other bronze-medal performance of the meet in the mile freestyle.
  • His time of 16:44.57 was three seconds out of silver medal position and three seconds ahead of fourth place.
OTHER TOP 10 PERFORMANCES
  • Senior Chloe Gonzalez (Miami Beach, Fla./Miami Beach Senior) continued her fine meet with a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.24 seconds.
  • First-year Peter Mou (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brimmer and May School) placed 10th in the 100 free for the men with a time of 47.14 seconds. His 46.96 time in the prelims was the fifth-fastest in Brandeis program history.
  • The Judges also had two top-10 times turned in in the 200-yard backstroke. Sophomore Luke Abrahamson (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) finished sixth with a time of 1:57.80, which ranks eighth all-time, while classmate Riley Pasicaran (Kennewick, Wash./Hanford) was ninth in 1:58.04, also the ninth-fastest time in program history.
  • Brandeis had a couple of interesting finishes in the men's 200 butterfly and women's 50 breaststroke, where their highest placement in the finals wasn't the team's best time.
  • In the men's 200 fly, Bundy placed 10th with a time of 2:04.12, well off his prelim time of 1:58.32, which got him into the 'A' final. Classmate AJ Martinez (North Miami Beach, Fla./NSU University School) swam 2:01.25 in the prelims, but his finals time of 1:59.03 was good for 12th place.
  • Similarly, in the women's 50 breaststroke, junior Audrey Teo (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) made the 'A' finals with a prelim mark of 32.45 seconds and finished 10th in 32.70. Junior Rebecca Kaplan (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary School) swam 33.38 in the prelims, but won her 'B' final in 32.66 seconds, good for 11th.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES UP NEXT
  • The Judges will be off until next semester, when they host Stonehill College on January 15th.
