Strong first half propels men past Bates, 76-55, in UAA Winter Classic opener

MEDFORD, Mass. – In the second game of the 2024 UAA Winter Challenge at Tufts University today, the Brandeis University men's basketball team used a strong first half on both ends of the floor to defeat Bates College, 76-55.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges doubled up the Bobcats in the first half, 41-20. Brandeis hit 49% from the field (17-35), while holding Bates to 35% (9-26).
  • Brandeis dominated the boards in the first 20 minutes, 25-10, including 10-2 on the offensive glass, leading to a 12-0 advantage in second-chance points.
  • Even though turnovers were closer, with eight for Bates and seven for Brandeis, the Judges owned a 6-2 edge in points off those miscues.
  • The game was tied at 6-6 with just over four minutes elapsed when Judge graduate student Jai Deshpande (San Carlos, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) connected on a 3-pointer that gave the Judges the lead for good.
  • It kicked off a 12-2 run that put Brandeis's lead at 18-8 with 11:03 after a bucket by junior Matthew Cadogan (Weston, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas).
  • The Bobcats were still with 10 points after a Peter Psyhogeos with 6:29 on the clock made it 28-18, but Brandeis scored 13 of the last 15 points of the half to take their largest lead at the break.
  • Judge senior Toby Harris (Durham, N.C./Durham Acad.) led the charge with 11 points and six rebounds, while Cadogan and junior Ethan Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y./Woodstock Acad.) each had seven points.
  • Jahmir Primer's five points paced the Bobcats in the first half.
  • The second half was played evenly, with both teams scoring 35 points, but the Bobcats never got any closer than 17 points at any point in the frame.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Harris led the Judges with 21 points and 11 points for his second double-double of the season and the seventh of his career. He shot 8-of-14 from the field, 2-of-4 from 3-point range and 3-of-3 from the line.
  • Four of Harris's rebounds came on the offensive glass.
  • Junior Elias Rodl (Berlin, Germany/Schulund Leistungssportzentrum Berlin) was the only other Judge to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points. Edwards added nine points, while grad student Sam Adusei (Worcester, Mass./St. George's School) and Cadogan each scored seven.
  • Grad student Aedan Using (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) led the Judges with five assists, along with six rebounds. Adusei also grabbed six caroms.
  • Primer led Bates with 12 points off the bench, while Psyhogeos netted 11. Sean O'Leary led the Bobcats with four assists, Psyhogeos had three steals and Babacar Pouye blocked four shots.
  • Brandeis outshot Bates, 45% to 35%, for the game, and hit twice as many 3-pointers, 10-5.
  • The Judges also finished with a 43-30 advantage on the boards and 14-2 margin in second-chance points thanks to a 14-9 edge in offensive rebounding.
