Lee just misses school record on Day 1 of Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. – On the first day of action at the 2024 Gompei Invitational at WPI, the Brandeis University swimming and diving teams had seven top-10 finishes and six program top-10 times this evening. The Judges scored 859 points and ranked sixth of nine teams at the co-ed scoring event.

The top performance of the evening was turned in by junior Benjamin Lee (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) in the 200-yard individual medley. Lee placed third overall with a PR time of 1:53.92. Lee finished just 0.13 seconds out of first place and his time was the second-fastest in program history, just 0.03 shy of a school record.

On the women's side, senior Chloe Gonzalez (Miami Beach, Fla./Miami Beach Senior) was the best performer, qualifying for two individual 'A' finals. She placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.80 seconds, which was the second-fastest all-time at Brandeis, while her 10th-place time of 24.65 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle was third all-time in program history.

First-year Peter Mou (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brimmer and May School) and junior Eric Xiao (College Station, Texas/AM Consolidated) each reached two 'A' finals for the men, in the 50 free and the 100 fly. Mou placed seventh in the 50 free with a time of 21.62 seconds, which was seventh in program history, and he was eighth in the 100 fly in 52.19 seconds, good for ninth in program history. Xiao was not far behind in either event, placing ninth in each. He posted a time of 21.86 seconds in the 50 free and was just 0.02 seconds behind his teammate in the 100 fly with a time of 52.21 seconds, 10th in program history.

The top relay performance for the Judges came in the men's 800-yard freestyle, where Lee, Xiao, junior Sam Bundy (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) and Mou placed sixth with a time of 7:12.54. The women's 800 free and both 200 medley relays all placed 11th.
