Women's hoops drops Invitational title game to George Fox, 58-49

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team was unable to match their first-round magic as the Judges fell to visiting George Fox University, 58-49, in the championship of the Brandeis Invitational presented by the Park Lodge Hotel Group today in Auerbach Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The lead changed hands three times and saw two ties in the opening quarter as the teams were tied at 14-all after 10 minutes.
  • George Fox opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run over the first 6:25 to take a 24-17 lead on a lay-up by Hanne Hopkins after a Bruin steal.
  • Brandeis responded with seven in a row of their own on two Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) lay-ups and a 3-pointer by senior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) that made it 24-all with 1:55 to go.
  • After a GFU timeout, the Bruins scored the final five points of the half to take a 29-24 lead into the break.
  • George Fox's Alyssa Wells led all players with nine points at the break, while Vaughan had eight for the Judges.
  • The Bruins opened the second half on an 11-4 run, opening up a double-digit lead at 40-28 with 6:13 to go in the third on a 3-pointer by Kylie Ritter.
  • Brandeis closed within five with 3:42 left in the third on a pair of free throws by rookie Jessica Maina (Bradford, Mass./Brooks School), but the visitors held Brandeis scoreless the rest of the stanza while scoring five points of their own to take a 45-35 lead into the final quarter.
  • Two early trifectas by Ava Skladanowski (Apex, N.C./Middle Creek) and Maina quickly cut the Brandeis deficit to four with two minutes gone, 45-41.
  • A pair of Vaughan foul shots with 5:17 left got the hosts within a one-possession game at 46-43, but GFU answered with a Wells trifecta to double the lead.
  • The Bruins defense did not allow another Brandeis field goal the rest of the way, as they took the nine-point victory, 58-49.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ohm finished with a game-high 16 points for the Judges, leading the team for the second game in a row, but she needed 4-of-13 shooting to get there. Ohm was 1-of-2 from 3-point range a day after making seven trifectas. She also hit all seven of her free throws.
  • Maina had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Vaughan had 10 points and four blocked shots, her second game in a row swatting four attempts.
  • George Fox's Wells led the visitors with 14 points, while Ritter and Claire Hinds had 11 and 10, respectively off the bench.
  • GFU's Tara Ushiro had five steals, helping the Bruins win the turnover battle, 23-15, converting those miscues into a 16-9 scoring advantage.
  • Brandeis had the overall rebounding edge, 34-33, but GFU's 13-9 margin on the offensive glass accounted for an 11-4 margin in second-chance points.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
  • Earlier in the day, Framingham State defeated Husson, 85-54, in the consolation game.
  • On the All-Tournament team were Lauren Cook of Husson; Katherine Haselton of Framingham State, Mia Skoro of George Fox, Ohm and Vaughan of Brandeis, and Wells of GFU was named the tournament MVP
