Kennedy's career-high 14 can't carry Judges past Babson

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team cut a 10-point deficit to four with possession of the ball in the fourth quarter, but the Judges couldn't get over the hump tonight as they dropped a pre-Thanksgiving contest to local rivals Babson College, 63-52, in Red Auerbach Arena.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 3-4.
  • Babson, 3-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visitors never trailed in this one, as they scored the game's first six points and outscored Brandeis, 13-7, in the first period, but the Judges' defense kept them in the game.
  • The Judges got within one midway through the second quarter on a jumper in the paint by junior Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) that made it 17-16 with 4:34 to go before the break.
  • The Beavers answered with eight of the next 10 points before a late Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) jumper got Brandeis within 25-20 at halftime.
  • Babson's Samantha Reale had seven points, while Camila Silk and Katelyn Mollica had six each at halftime. No Brandeis player had more than four.
  • After the visitors opened the second half on a Mollica 3-pointer that gave them a 28-20 lead, Brandeis answered with a 10-3 run over the next three minutes. Another Ohm bucket got the Judges within 31-30 with 6:57 to go in the third.
  • Silk answered with a back-door lay-up, followed by a Mollica trifecta, pushing Babson's lead back to six at 36-30 just a minute later.
  • After another Ohm jumper for the Judges, the teams combined for just two field goals over the final 5:30, both going to Babson as the visitors were ahead, 40-32, after three periods.
  • Another driving bucket by Silk to open the fourth gave Babson its first double-digit lead at 42-32, but Brandeis didn't go away.
  • The Judges scored six-straight points, with junior Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) hitting a lay-up with 8:34 on the clock to get her team within 42-38 and forcing Babson to call timeout.
  • Brandeis got three defensive stops, but couldn't answer on the offensive end, as Mollica's driving lay-up pushed the Babson lead back to six. An Ohm jumper made it 44-40 with 5:47 to go.
  • The Judges couldn't answer after another defensive stop, and Babson's Emily Flynn made them pay with a corner 3-pointer that pushed the Brandeis deficit back to seven points, and the Judges would not get within two possessions the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis saw two players score in double figures tonight. Ohm had 14 points on 6-of-16 from the field, 0-for-3 from beyond the arc, and 2-for-2 from the line. The 14 points were her season low. Ohm also led the Judges with three assists.
  • Kennedy scored a career-high 14 points off the bench in just her third game of the season. She was 5-for-9 from the floor, 1-for-1 from 3-point range and 3-for-4 from the line.
  • Senior Brooke Reed (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) led Brandeis with nine rebounds, four on the offensive glass.
  • Babson had three players score in double figures. Mollica led the way with 17 points, while Silk had 15 and Reale had 14.
  • Both Silk and Reale finished with double-doubles, grabbing 11 and 10, respectively. Silk had seven offensive boards and Reale had five, as the two of them combined more offensive rebounds than Brandeis's full team total of 10. The Beavers had a 46-36 overall rebounding edge.
  • Flynn finished with a game-high five assists, while Silk had four helpers. Reale finished with four steals.
  • The Beavers outscored Brandeis, 21-6, from 3-point range and 12-9 in points off turnovers.
  • Brandeis head coach Julie Prichett served as an assistant coach for three seasons at Babson, helping the Beavers to two NCAA Division III tournaments, including a berth in the Elite Eight in 2023.
