PROVIDENCE, R.I. – At the 2024-25 Northeast Fencing Conference meet this weekend at Brown University, the Brandeis University fencing teams earned a total of nine wins. The men went 4-3 overall, 4-2 in the NFC. The women posted a 5-6 overall mark, 4-5 in the NFC.

SQUAD BREAKDOWN
- The saber squads continued to have the most success for the Judges, with the men's squad going 5-2 and the women posting a 9-2 record. The women excelled in close matches, going 5-2 in 5-4 decisions, with those two 4-5 results being their only two defeats.
- The women's foil squad also posted a winning record overall, going 6-5 with a pair of 5-4 wins and two losses by that score.
- Men's foil had three wins, while men's and women's epee each had two.
TOP INDIVIDUALS
- The winningest performer on the weekend was junior saber fencer Kat Xikes (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) of the women. Xikes posted a winning record in all 10 of her matches, with four 3-0 matches and two 2-0 marks to go 24-4. Her 3-0 sweeps came against Vassar, BC, Brown and Wellesley.
- Senior women's saber fencer Kayla Turnoff (Westfield, N.J./Kent Place School) also earned wins in all 10 of her matches, going 18-10 overall, including a 3-0 record against Wagner.
- Senior Bronwyn Rothman-Hall (San Francisco, Calif./Ruth Asawa School of the Arts) and sophomore Vera Witte (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) each recorded 10 wins for the epee squad, with Rothman-Hall going 3-0 against Wagner and Witte sweeping Denison.
- Junior Hannah Du (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) topped the foil squad with nine wins.
- The top winner on the men's side was sophomore Matthew Chaves (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy Upper School), who went 12-6 with wins in each of his six matches, including a 3-0 mark against Vassar.
- Sophomore Alex Piwowar (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) was 11-9 overall, with 3-0 records against Vassar and Wheaton.
- Senior Tony Escueta (Grand Prairie, Texas/Abeka Home School Academy) went 10-4 in saber action, including 3-0 records against Wagner, MIT and Sacred Heart.
- On the epee squad, senior Mark Shamis (San Jose, Calif./Leigh) picked up at least one win in each of his six matches, going 8-6 overall. Shamis had two wins each against Wagner and Wayne State.
- The men's foil squad saw seven different fencers compete, with first-year Jacob Lee (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) earning six wins and three others picking up five victories.
