ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In their final match of the 2024 season, the seventh-seeded Brandeis University volleyball team was upset by host and eighth-seeded University of Rochester in three sets today in the seventh-place match at the University Athletic Association championship tournament. Set scores were 25-19, 25-28, 25-21.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Yellowjackets were extremely efficient through the first two sets, tallying 31 kills and just six errors in 58 total attacks for a .431 hitting percentage, including .517 in the second set.
- The Judges hit a respectable .233 (24 K-10 E-60 TA) in those sets, but it wasn't enough to offset the hosts' attack.
- Rochester led wire-to-wire in the first set, starting with a 5-1 lead. Brandeis closed within a point at 7-6, but UR answered with five points in a row and kept the Judges at bay the rest of the way, taking it 25-19.
- Brandeis tried to turn the tables in the second set, opening up a 5-1 lead thanks to a strong start by senior Tatiana Wainer (Miami, Fla./Schech Hillel Community School), who had a kill and a block in the stanza.
- The Judges maintained their lead at 8-5 on a kill by senior Lara Verstovsek (Houston, Texas/Episcopal), but UR scored the next three points to tie it up at 8-all.
- Brandeis kept the lead until Rochester went on a 3-0 run at 13-11 to take a 14-13 lead. With the set tied at 15-all, the hosts scored six of the next seven points and went on to claim the set, 25-18.
- The third set was closer, as Brandeis outhit UR .290 to .237 and forced the Yellowjackets into nine errors, three more than they had in the first two sets. UR still had 18 kills to 11 for the Judges and delivered three service aces in the mix.
- Rochester never trailed in the set and the Yellowjackets were ahead by as many as five points at 15-10. The Judges clawed their way back into the set with a number of 2-1 runs, eventually tying things up at 20-all on a block by Wainer and first-year Madison Haft-Abromovich (Stratford, Conn./Rye Country Day School).
- Rochester answered with kills on five of the next six points to close out the match, 25-21.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Judges were paced offensively by Verstovsek and first-year outside hitter Kennedy Lilly (Atlanta, Ga./Eagle's Landing Christian School) with eight kills each. Both players had just one error on the day, with Kennedy hitting. 500 for the match and Verstovsek at .304.
- Haft-Abromovich added six kills and two block assists, while Wainer had four kills and a team-high five block assists.
- Sophomore libero Ava Ferrigno (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton Community) led the team with nine digs, while junior Julia Liang (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) had 18 assists and first-year Alexa Ho (Queens, N.Y./Francis Lewis) had 13.
- Rochester put four different players in double digits in kills, accounting for their entire total: Caroline Hoag and Ashley Cook totaling 13, Rylee Bergeron 12 and Myla Nover-Estes with 11.
The Judges close their season with a 16-14 record, their second-best finish in the 10-year tenure of head coach
