Quick response gives men a 2-1 win over Carnegie Mellon in UAA opener

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team scored the game-winning goal just 11 seconds after surrendering an equalizer to host Carnegie Mellon as the Judges took a 2-1 victory over the Tartans in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 4-3-2, 1-0 UAA.
  • Carnegie Mellon, 6-3-2, 0-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis controlled the first half, outshooting CMU, 6-4, before they opened the scoring in the 18th minute.
  • After a ball served into the box was unable to be cleared by the Tartans, it fell to junior Elan Romo (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) at the top of the 18-yard box. Romo spun and shot a laser into the upper corner for his first goal of the season and the fourth of his career.
  • Carnegie Mellon answered in the 64th minute, when Drew McKim's corner kick was headed home by a diving Brendan Schonwetter.
  • The Judges needed just 11 seconds to go back on top. After the restart, a long pass from midfield was corralled by junior Nico Beninda (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township). He played the ball forward to senior walk-on Eli Mones (Portland, Ore./Grant) just at the top of the 18. Mones sent a bouncing ball along the ground into the far right netting past before the Carnegie Mellon goalkeeper could react.
  • The goal was Mones' first since 2021 and the second of his career. His previous goal was also a UAA game-winner, in overtime against Emory.
  • The Tartans kept the pressure on after surrendering the goal, outshooting Brandeis 11-4 in the second half and 15-10 overall, but the hosts could not equalize a second time.
  • Brandeis senior goalkeeper Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) made four saves to earn the win. Two of his stops came after the Judges went back on top.
  • Kai Yamamoto had three stops for CMU in the losing effort.
  • The Brandeis win snapped a three-match winless streak against the Tartans, but they are now 6-1-3 in the last 10 meetings.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges play their final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday, October 8, at 7 p.m. against MIT. They meet Washington University on Friday at 1:30 p.m. for their first home UAA game of the season.
