PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Brandeis University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to #5-ranked Emory today at Carnegie Mellon, but the Judges bounced back with a 3-0 win over Rochester to earn the seventh seed in the upcoming University Athletic Association tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs Emory (23-25, 25-21, 25-11, 25-21)
- The Judges stunned the Eagles in the first set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead.
- Brandeis stayed ahead until Emory won four points in a row to turn a 21-19 deficit into a 23-21 lead on a Kate Larocco kill.
- Brandeis answered with a kill by senior Lara Verstovsek (Houston, Texas/Episcopal), a block by senior Tatiana Wainer (Miami, Fla./Schech Hillel Community) and first-year Madison Haft-Abromovich (Stratford, Conn/Rye CDS), and back-to-back kills from junior Anna Ertischek (Montgomery, Texas/Lake Creek) to take the opener, 25-23.
- Emory tried to take control of the second set, and eventually doubled up the Judges at 18-9.
- Brandeis battled back with a 12-5 run to close within 23-21 on a kill by Verstovsek, but the comeback ran out of steam as the Eagles took it, 25-21.
- Emory had little problem in the third set, opening up a 6-0 lead thanks to a block and two attacking errors by the Judges and a pair of Alana Dawson kills. They would increase the advantage to 8-1 and roll to a 25-11 win in the third, holding Brandeis to four kills and nine errors in their 22 attacks.
- Brandeis battled back in the third set from a pair of five-point holes at 9-4 and 11-6. They tied things up at 16 and stayed within a point at 22-21, but the Eagles got two blocks and an attacking error to finish off the set and the match, 25-21.
- Brandeis was led by 11 kills each from Verstovsek and first-year Kennedy Lilly (Atlanta, Ga./Eagle's Landing Christian Academy), both tied for match-high honors with Emory's Dawson. Ertischek finished with 10 kills.
- Junior Julia Liang (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) had 19 assists for the Judges, while first-year Alexa Ho (Queens, N.Y./Frances Lewis) had 17.
- Sophomore Ava Ferrigno (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton Community) had a match-high 27 digs, while Verstovsek added 14 and first-year libero Isabella Irizarry (Guaynabo, P.R./Cupeyville School) had 18. Verstovsek tied Wainer with six blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs Rochester (25-22, 27-25, 25-16)
- The Judges and Yellowjackets played a tight first set, with neither team establishing a lead larger than three points until Brandeis went ahead, 21-17 and 22-18. UR won the next two points to close back within two, but Verstovsek had the Judges' last three kills to take it, 25-22.
- Brandeis pulled an epic comeback in the second set. After UR won the first four points of the, the Judges trailed by as many as 10 points on two occasions, at 16-6 and 17-7.
- After the latter, the Judges cut the deficit in half with a 5-0 run that they eventually extended to 20-8. Brandeis managed to tie things up at 24-all after fending off three set points.
- The Judges had one of their own at 25-24. After Rochester answered, an Ertischek kill and a Rochester error gave Brandeis a 27-25 win.
- Brandeis opened the third set on a 6-2 streak, but after UR tied things at 7-all, Brandeis rattled off six of the next seven points and never looked back, taking the third, 25-16, for their first UAA win of the season.
- With the win, the Judges will avoid Emory in the first round of the UAA tournament, and will face either Washington U, Case Western Reserve, or Carnegie Mellon, depending on how the final matches of the Round Robin play out.
- Verstovsek had a match-high 14 kills, while Ertischek had 10. The two combined for a .363 hitting percentage (24 kills, 4 errors, 55 total attacks).
- Ho had 21 assists, while Ferrigno led the team with 12 digs.
- Brandeis had 12 aces to just five for UR. They also had an 8-2 advantage in blocks.
- Brandeis's 14 wins this season are their second-most under head coach Alesia Bennett, behind only the 17 they compiled in 2017. Two more wins will guarantee a winning record for the team, their first since that 2017 campaign.

- The Judges will wrap up the regular season next Saturday with a tri-match at Coast Guard along with Salve Regina, while the UAA tournament will take place on Nov. 9 and 10.
