Judges drop 78-60 loss to Rochester

WALTHAM, Mass. – The visiting University of Rochester women's basketball team scored 12 unanswered points at the end of the first half and start of the second today as the Yellowjackets defeated the host Brandeis University Judges, 78-60, in University Athletic Association action in Red Auerbach Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half was closely contested, featuring six ties and six lead changes.
  • Brandeis went on top early, scoring 10 of the game's first 15 points to take their largest lead of the game on a Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) lay-up 4:39 into the contest.
  • The Judges were still ahead, 15-12, following an Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) 3-pointer with 2:01 left in the first period.
  • UR hit the two last buckets of the stanza, the last a buzzer-beater by Rylee Drahos that gave the visitors a 16-15 lead after 10 minutes.
  • Drahos also scored the first bucket of the second quarter, kicking off a 5-0 run that put Rochester ahead, 21-15.
  • Brandeis rallied thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by junior Caitlin Gresko (Howell, N.J./Howell), the last of which gave the Judges a 25-23 lead with 6:34 left in the half.
  • The game remained close, with a lay-up by Judge junior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) getting the hosts within 32-31 with just over two minutes to play.
  • UR closed strong, getting a lay-up and a free throw from Drahos and a 3-pointer from Hannah Lindemuth to take a seven-point lead, 38-31, into the locker room.
  •  After ending the first half on a 6-0 run, the Yellowjackets opened the second the same way, as Abby Gress converted a three-point play and Lindemuth dialed long distance again, giving UR a 44-31 advantage.
  • Brandeis briefly closed within nine points on an Ohm bucket with 6:35 to go in the third, but a 7-0 string by the visitors, capped by a Lindemuth 3-pointer, put things away, 51-35, with 4:40 to go in the third.
  • The Judges would get within 10 points early in the final quarter, but no closer, as UR went ahead by as many as 24 points before the final 18-point margin of victory, 78-60.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Gresko led Brandeis in scoring for the seventh game in a row with 10 points.
  • Graduate student Francesca Marchese (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) hit three 3-pointers to finish with nine points. She now has 155 career trifecta, moving within 12 of second place on the career list and 14 of the top spot with seven games to go.
  • Ohm finished with eight points, while senior Selenya Gonzalez (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) and sophomore Molly James (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) each had seven.
  • James also led the Judges with seven rebounds, and sophomore Brooke Reed (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) led the team with four assists, a career-best.
  • Lindemuth led all scorers with 22 points for the women, mostly by hitting her first six 3-pointers the day, while Gress added 19 points and seven rebounds.
  • Drahos led the visitors with eight rebounds, while Callie McCully had five assists and Franki Gomez had four.
  • UR outshot Brandeis for the game, 47% (29-62) to 34% (22-64), including 47% (8-17) to 20% (7-35) from 3-point range.
  • After starting strong from deep, the Judges at one point missed 14-straight trifecta attempts.
 
UP NEXT
  • These two teams will meet a week from today in Rochester. Brandeis will first travel to Atlanta to meet Emory next Friday evening at 5 :30 p.m.
