Otoo (20p, 10r) leads men to first UAA win of 2024, 78-61, at CMU

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Brandeis University men's basketball junior Gilbert Otoo (Burtonsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) picked up his first 20-point game and first double-double in a Judges uniform tonight as Brandeis went on the road to earn a 78-61 University Athletic Association victory at Carnegie Mellon University.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 10-3, 1-1 UAA
  • Carnegie Mellon: 9-4, 1-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the lead changed hands five times over the first six minutes of the game, Brandeis took the lead for good on a jumper by senior Sam Adusei (Worcester, Mass./St. George's School) that made it 12-11 in favor of the Judges.
  • Over the next 9:16, Brandeis outscored Carnegie Mellon, 20-5, doubling up the Tartans at 32-16 on a 3-pointer by sophomore Ethan Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y./Woodstock Acad.).
  • The Tartans battled back, cutting the 16-point deficit down to eight at halftime after Justin Allen hit a pair of late free throws to make it 37-29 in favor of the Judges.
  • Otoo hit the first bucket of the second half, and after CMU's Nolan Casey answered, Brandeis senior Aedan Using (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) hit a jumper that reestablished the 10-point lead, and the Judges' lead would not fall below double digits again.
  • Brandeis led by as many as 20 points late in the second half before the final 17-point margin of victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Otoo led the way with game-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds. He had 11 points and three boards in the first half, nine and seven in the second.
  • Otoo finished 9-of-17 from the field, 1-of-5 from 3-point range and 1-of-3 from the line.
  • Four of his six rebounds came on the offensive end.
  • Otoo matched his career-high in rebounding, set while he played at Trinity (Conn.) and was seven points of his career-best, also set in a Bantam uniform.
  • Edwards finished second on the team in scoring with 14 points off the bench, while sophomore Jake Bender (Hope, R.I./St. George's School) had 11 points, seven in the second half.
  • Senior David Perez-Miralles (Miami, Fla./Riviera Prep) had a fine all-around game with seven rebounds and seven points.
  • Using led the team with five assists, one more than the entire CMU roster.
  • Carnegie Mellon 14 points from Allen, but he was held eight points below his season scoring average. Casey added 12 points, while R.J. Holmes tied with Otoo for game-high rebounding honors with 10.
  • Brandeis played terrific defense, holding Carnegie Mellon 21 points below their season scoring average of 82.7 points per game and limiting a team shooting 46.2% from the field for the season to just 32.8% tonight.
  • While the Judges struggled from 3-point range (5-19, 26.3%), they held CMU even lower (3-13, 23.1%). Brandeis shot 65% on their shots inside the arc (28-43), leading to a commanding 50-24 margin in points in the paint.
