Men battle to scoreless draw with WNEU

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team opened its 2023 season today with a scoreless draw against Western New England University, despite the Judges owning a 17-11 edge in shots.
TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 0-0-1.
  • WNEU: 0-0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges controlled the opening period, when they outshot the Golden Bears, 11-4.
  • The best opportunity of the half was had by sophomore Nico Beninda (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) in the final minute of the period. He dribbled in alone on WNEU keeper Bryaden Casinghino, who came off his line to block Benind's initial shot and force his rebound to go wide.
  • In the second half, the visitors came out with more aggression. The Golden Bears outshot Brandeis, 7-6, in the final 45 minutes, but were unable to break through.
  • Brandeis senior Sancho Maroto Tobias (Acton, Mass./Lexington) led the Judges with seven shots, three coming on goal, as many as WNEU combined.
  • Junior Quinton Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) had two saves in his second collegiate start.
  • This was the third time in the last five meetings that resulted in a draw between the two sides.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges hit the road on Sunday to take on Eastern Connecticut State University at 4 p.m.
