Kenkelen gets on the board, but women lose at NYU, 4-1

NEWARK, N.J. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team finally got on the board in University Athletic Association play, but the host and 16th-ranked NYU Violets scored four second-half goals to spoil the Judges' upset bid on the campus of Rutgers-Newark today, 4-1.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 6-8-3, 0-7-0 UAA.
  • NYU: 12-2-2, 3-2-2 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a cagey first half that saw just seven shots total, five for the home team and two for the visitors, Brandeis broke on top first.
  • In the 34th minute, after a Brandeis free kick in the offensive zone, NYU was unable to clear the ball. First-year midfielder Abby Kenkelen (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill) took a shot from about 30 yards out and the ball hit off the crossbar and deflected down, crossing the goal line in the process. The goal was Kenkelen's first of her career.
  • NYU came out aggressively in the second half. The Violets were able to break through in the 57th minute on a goal by Makenzie Rodrigues after the Judges failed to clear the ball.
  • Rodrigues scored her second of the game and what proved to be the game-winner in the 72nd minute on an assist by Rachel Kim.
  • The Violets added a penalty kick goal in the 77th minute from Gabriella Funk after Brandeis was whistled for a hand ball in the box. They closed out the scoring on a late goal by Kelli Keady in the 89th minute.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis first-year Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside) made five saves in the losing effort.
  • Riley Felsher earned the win for NYU, making two second-half saves without allowing a goal.
  • The Violets finished with a 24-9 advantage in shots after a 19-7 edge in the second half.
  • They also had a 5-2 corner kick advantage, while Brandeis was whistled for two more fouls, 11-9.
