Late Osselmann-Chai goal gives Judges 2-1 UAA win over WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team got a goal in the final minute of play today to pick up a road victory in the University Athletic Association over host Washington University, 2-1.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 3-5-3, 1-0-1 UAA.
  • Washington U.: 4-5-1, 0-2-0 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges overcame a deficit to win for the first time this season. WashU opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Zach Susse scored by running onto a ball over the top of the Brandeis defense from Owen Culver.
  • Brandeis equalized 13 minutes later in the 38th minute on the counterattack. The Bears took a free kick 25 yards from goal that Judge junior keeper Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) caught easily. He started the transition with a long throw down the left sideline. The Judges worked the ball down the opposing sideline quickly with a pair of throw-ins. Senior Sancho Maroto Tobias (Acton, Mass./Lexington) was able to take the last into the box and put a cross towards the net. WashU tried to clear, but sophomore Elan Romo (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) redirected the ball back into the net for his second goal of the season.
  • After getting outshot, 11-3, in the first half, Brandeis took the front foot in the second with a 9-2 shooting advantage.
  • The Judges pressure paid off in the 90th minute. With just 58 seconds left on the clock, sophomore Rainer Osselmann-Chai (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) slid forward on a ball by Maroto Tobias that was headed for the end-line. Osselmann-Chai directed it off the far post and in for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
  • Wrabley made one final save in the 90th minute to finish off the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • WashU ended up with a 13-12 edge in overall shots, but Brandeis had 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The teams were even in corner kicks, 6-all.
  • Wrabley had five saves in the winning effort, while the Bears' Owen Ross also had five stops.
  • Fouls were 10-9 to the Judges, though Washington had four yellow cards to one for Brandeis.
  • Brandeis's win in St. Louis was their first since 2016, and their overall record is 5-2 in the last seven meetings with the Bears.
  • Osselmann-Chai's goal was his first career game-winner.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will wrap up their non-conference schedule on Tuesday afternoon with their annual derby with Babson, the 70th all-time meeting between the sides.
